I have found it helpful to think about intensive focus on one figure as a means to learning one instance of a tradition really well, the better to get a handle on the relevant tradition itself. The sense for how various pieces fit together is also the sense for how they can be re-shuffled.
I think a big problem with dissertation writing is that so often students are encouraged to focus on one figure. There's lots of good reasons for this, but, there should be a requirement that before you pass your viva, you have to be able point out why your "guy" doesn't actually solve every problem
