I have found it helpful to think about intensive focus on one figure as a means to learning one instance of a tradition really well, the better to get a handle on the relevant tradition itself. The sense for how various pieces fit together is also the sense for how they can be re-shuffled.
I think a big problem with dissertation writing is that so often students are encouraged to focus on one figure. There's lots of good reasons for this, but, there should be a requirement that before you pass your viva, you have to be able point out why your "guy" doesn't actually solve every problem

Figured I'd get my account going with some pictures from my most recent trip to Egypt. Starting with Mar Girgis church. The first picture is the view from the Mar Girgis metro stop (the Cairo metro is so clean!), and the second is the view of the dome from inside.
