People are the products of the familial and social environments they grew up in and in which the lived their later lives. All have good aspects and bad aspects existing in the same body. They are what they are, not what we would prefer. And we are not what others would prefer.

The engineers in my life are allergic to gray areas and suspicious of people who see them. They seek answers and believe there is only one answer in many, perhaps most, situations.

This society values quickness over thoroughness every time. I remember a kid in my high school that everyone thought was dumb, slow. He now has a PhD in some sort of esoteric physics. Good thing he was able to enter college and show what he could do.

Truman did not tear down the Executive Mansion. It was extensively renovated because it was structurally unsound to the point that the second floor was unsafe for anyone to use. The exterior walls were not demolished.

You name them. How civilized. In my neck of the woods we call them that (insert your favorite curse word) turkey. One challenged my car on the street in front of my house...fanned out its tail feathers and stood right in my path. Honking the horn at it didn't phase it.

Now Missouri has redrawn to make one more Republican seat. Florida seems to be working on it. Other states considering it. And voters have something to say about who wins those seats in 2026. Who can predict what the result of all this will be?

So an arms race is about to begin. Does any "side" win an arms race? In a future America is this sort of arms race going to be a fixture in government? If so, what is gained?

But you're in the more urban part of Southern Illinois. Go to some rural place closer to Cairo and you will hear a little more Southern inflection.
