Lichens and other stuff from the beautiful English Lake District and beyond.
Belated photos from the Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte Group trip to Glencoyne last week. Lots of upland rainforest stuff like Sphaerophorus globosus and Hypotrachyna taylorensis; more Thelotrema than I could shake my stick at. So it had to lean against it instead... #lichenGBI

Final @btobirds.bsky.social heron count of the year this morning. One local heronry appears deserted, the other's bigger than I've known it. Have they moved from one to t'other? We'll never know...

It has been a good year for the Irises.

Made it out today, and explored the currently very dry beck: more Dermatocarpon luridum than I was expecting; a rather fine stonefly larva; an old metal and wire contraption. 4 species of warbler heard, otter spraint found, and I have Verrucaria samples to "investigate at a later date". #LichenGBI

Lovely morning yesterday at Thorneythwaite: new locations for Sticta sylvatica and Ricasolia laetevirens; crying-out-for-rain Wilson's filmy fern and new-species-for-the-site Leptogium cyanescens. The sunshine and shade was awful for photos; but great to be in. And a willow warbler singing too!

In my garden, fresh out this aft. Roll up, roll up ( or should that be flap up, flap up...)

Mid-March, and once again the early wood anemones down by the river have opened. #WildflowerHour

A fine day at Tilberthwaite yesterday, exploring old copper works and slate quarries with Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte Group. Blastenia (was Caloplaca) crenularia; Collema furfuraceum; Rhizocarpon oederi surrounded by Acarospora sinopica. Reds in the settling beds! #LichenGBI

Couldn't resist the #YellowFlowers among the rubbish at the edge of the Co-op car park in Bolton Le Sands: Coltsfoot and Groundsel. #WildflowerHour

Out west for a couple of days

A morning's bramble bashing to reduce the shading out of Collema flaccidum, Pseudoschismatomma rufescens and Pertusaria pertusa on some favourite dying ash trees. Ooh look! Primroses are revealed... chaffinches sing. #LichenGBI

Great to be out again with Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte group (after a gap of several months). Seatoller woods: mostly acid bark stuff including Ochrolechia tartarea and more Hypotrachyna taylorensis than I've ever seen before. Also Pyrenula acutispora: new to me. #LichenGBI

Lovely day wandering near Claife. Found some interesting graffiti, some Mycoblastus sanguinarius; a little Chrysothrix candelaris and Lecanactis abietina. #LichenGBI

Lichens from another stunner of a blue skied Lakeland day. Oodles of Lasallia pustulata; unexpected Sphaerophorus fragilis; the pareidolia of a face in a map lichen island; prolifically fertile Usnea subfloridana. #LichenGBI

Finds from todays woodland blunderings (among the wreckage of #StormArwen 3 years on): Hypotrachyna laevigata (happiest on a felled larch); Graphis elegans; Coniocarpon cinnabarinum; Opposite Leaved Golden Saxifrage flowering already!

Meadows morning after Rowan's roar: woodpeckers drum, redwing tseep, dunnock song rolls along. The alder catkin chequers grow more purple by the day...

Winter weather made the Lakes and winter weather makes the Lakes. But there's unexpected signs of spring too...

12th night, so Big Mantelpiece Birdwatch time (like @rspb.bsky.social's garden birdwatch only with cards).
And there's big news: for the first time ever Robin isn't in the top 5! Doves the winner this year, with Avocet a new entry.
My favourite was this Sun Owl and foliage by Kenojuak Ashevak...

And Ambleside Natural History Society produced a nature trail in the 1960s. We ( ANHS) rewalked it last year: if you want I can send you details/ the route. Here's one of the woodcuts by Harold Auty that illustrated it.
