After converting to Islam, he was banned from boxing and sentenced to 5 years in prison for refusing induction into the Army, his conviction was overturned, but he lost 4 years of his Boxing career #blacksky

As tensions escalated, police dropped a bomb on the house, igniting a fire that killed 11 people and, leaving 250 homeless.

Born Dec. 5, 1918 in NC, She became the highest-ranking Black female officer in WWII. She led the 6888th Central Postal Battalion in Europe clearing mail backlogs.

Annie J. Easley was Born in 1933 in Alabama, In 1955 she joined NACA as a "human computer" She became a pioneer in computer science and contributed to many NASA projects. A STEM advocate, she inspired many and addressed discrimination at NASA during her 34 year career. #blacksky

First Black Town

In 1836, Free Frank McWorter founded New Philadelphia, Illinois, the first Black-registered town in the US.

He established an integrated community, that was even a stop on the Underground Railroad. The town thrived until around 1869 but by 1885, it was mostly gone. #blacksky

Banana pudding

Its origins date to the late 19th century, coming a Southern classic post WWII but it was Black cooks that perfected the mix of ripe bananas, custards, and vanilla wafers, making it a staple at gatherings. By the late 20th century, it was a key Black American social treat. #blacksky

Happy Birthday, Ella Baker

Born in 1903, Ella Baker was a key figure in the Movement. She co-founded the Young Negroes Cooperative League, the SCLC, and the SNCC and worked with the NAACP inspiring activists everywhere.

She dedicated her life to equality until her passing in 1986.

Black Santa

The idea of a Black Santa emerged during the movement but it has deeper roots. In the 19th century, “Blackface Santas” were created to mocked and harass Black people.

By the 20th century, Black communities reclaimed Black Santa, promoting representation for Black children. #blacksky

Doris Miller became a hero during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941.

Without training he manned an anti-aircraft gun and carried wounded crewmates to safety. He became first Black American to receive the Navy Cross. Sadly Miller died in 1943 but his legacy remains. #blacksky

During Jim Crow, Black resorts offered a refuge from racism and a place for leisure "without humiliation"

These spots were hubs for cultural expression and entrepreneurship. Place like Highland Beach and Idlewild, created spaces of joy and empowerment, forging community amid segregation. #blacksky
