There are a few things going on in the book. One of them is a love affair that develops in the comments left in the margins, by two readers who are sharing a copy of the book which sits on the shelf of a library.

I see a scenario like this:

Somehow, in conversation, one of his aides said, meaninglessly, "oh, sir, you can't go on the roof."

The First Felon stuck out his chin, as much as that is still possible, and then this happened.
