I had a basket of small stuffed animals that I used to act out scenes. There was one goat. We had spirited debates about which character in a given play deserved to be the goat. I remember Mercutio won GOAT status, and I was so proud of the arguments being made.

I had students watching family members die over Zoom. I did not blame them for not being super engaged with a Shakespeare seminar that year; I just switched over to making the class the most entertaining distraction I could because they literally needed an escape.

Cool. I'll leave it as-is, maybe with a footnote, so students trying to find your work stand the best chance of doing so. (I'm hardly going to complain if they decide they want to read more from someone I hold up as an example of excellent writing.)

Oh, hey, that reminds me. I quote some passages from Culture Warlords in some nonfiction writing curriculum I created a few years ago. (You're an example of how to write gorgeous paragraphs.) Would it be appropriate to update the citation to Tal Lavin, or would you prefer I leave it as-is?

Update: I was expressly forbidden from reading in the courtroom, but my backup plan if called to the jury box was to explain that I have researched/written too many true crime scripts to take a cop at their word. I stand by this plan.

I have been reliably informed that my ability to string interesting words together in exciting new combinations makes me a traitor to my people and generally untrustworthy.
