Instead of making another loop, he slides down the wall to sit next to Ghost, bodies pressed flush from hip to knee, and accepts the half-smoked cigarette offered to him. He tries not to think of how the filter is wet with Ghost’s spit, pretends he isn’t imaging he can taste him there, slid in with the nicotine and the tar and the longing, and wonders how long he can keep doing this before he breaks apart. Before the butterflies in his stomach rot alongside all the unsaid words and become poison. Before he becomes poison - something toxic, deadly, compromised. John holds the smoke in his lungs for far longer than is advisable, keeps his mouth shut, pretends the ghost of a taste is all he needs to keep going.
