I read The Safekeep, the debut novel by Yale Van Der Wouden. The ending was too tidy for me. Still I can recommend it. It was especially compelling as an examination of how the Netherlands failed to really grapple with the fate of Dutch Jews during and after World War Two.

I saw Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein. It has received great acclaim. I found it often visually stunning, but stilted, plodding, dull. Jacob Elordi as the creature was great. Oscar Isaac too as Victor Frankenstein. The big themes are there battering you. A good film, but far from great

I watched the horror film Weapons. Well acted and appropriately creepy. One night at 2:17 a.m. all students (except 1) from an elementary school class left their homes, ran away and never returned. A good concept. It gets a bit ridiculous at points, but it’s a good entertainment.

I read this book. It describes what I think is at the core of a disease infecting America: a vision of USA as a Christian nation to be run by Christians that idolize a conservative view of the Constitution and not the teachings of Christ. This book is way too long, but worthwhile. #BookSky
