Firefox has a (pretty cute) new mascot. Mozilla calls Kit a 'companion through an internet that's private, open and actually yours' – but does the browser need one? www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/11/fire...

34 years ago today, Linus Torvalds posted to the Minix newsgroup on an OS he was building, billed as "just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu". That OS was Linux, and it revolutionised computing. #Linux #OTD #foss

PSA: Ubuntu 24.10 'Oracular Oriole' is now end of life. It will get no more package updates from Canonical. If you use it, you should upgrade to #Ubuntu 25.04 to continue receiving support (bug fixes, security patches, etc). 🪦

My #Ubuntu desktop circa October 2008. That glassy dock and widget look I had going on is sooooo dated. It will NEVER come back into fashion…

The chefs kiss in the grift is the confirmatory feedback loop: Google's AI overview illustrating its explanation of the real plant with the same AI generated image the 'grifters' use.

Which will help encourage said-searchers to engage with the row of sponsored links also on the page…

Curiosity doesn't kill the cat's face orchid grift thanks to Gemini — here's what a 'cat's face orchid' looks like in reality vs the slop version Gemini positions as real.

It gets more depressing because if would-be buyers turn to Google to find out if the cat-faced plant is real, Gemini showcases the fake AI-slop pictures in its answer to say it is.

Off-topic, but wow. Someone sent me a link to these on eBay and I have myself a headache from eye rolling - 203 sold = 203 brits going to be mighty disappointed their £8 seeds don't grow into cat faced plants with whiskers but (probably) some non-native invasive species.

It's cute that eBay still thinks Netbooks are a thing.

Is Ubuntu 25.10 the Quizzical Quokka? Canonical’s April 1st post could be canny marketing or an April Fools' prank. If real, do you love it or are *you* left puzzled by it?! www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/04/ubun...

A wee apropos of nothing: we added a #Bluesky share button to the social bar beneath articles on the blog 🦋

The button reads 'skeet' for today (only) as a nod to the fact Bluesky /users/ wanted to call a 'post' a 'skeet' (Sky + Tweet = Skeet) but the CEO said absolutely not, so… they aren't!

Oh wow — I hate that is AI, but I have to agree: that is a phenomenal. It'd make a great book cover — heck, I recently found a copy of a book on cryptids I'd been after for years. That image would make a sweet cover for a reprint (although the cover on my edition isn't awful)

Yeah, it's both a flag (representing Mozilla's 'activist spirit', and reusing the 'M' from Mozilla) and a pixel art rendition of its original dinosaur mascot. Quite clever!

Woke up to a peculiar (anonymous) message in the OMG! inbox today. At least I now know the Bluesky banner in the homepage slider is being noticed 😅 I signed up for Bluesky about 10 months ago, and the site has had a Bluesky link in the header and footer for ~5 months or so 💁🏻‍♂️

@scruball.bsky.social Hmm, intrigue! Question: did you upload the GIF yourself (as a file) or did you select it in the GIF picker? Cos whenever I upload a GIF I've mad it doesn't /seem/ to work… once I hit post. I'll attach some to this and see if I end up with egg on my face.
