Still think Michael Mann’s analytic distinction between the despotic and the infrastructural state is of some use but when I went back to reread it this evening I was rudely reminded that mainstream political science really is a foreign country.

There was a time I was fond of quoting Terrence's “nothing human is alien to me” to my students. It’s only later, in an uncanny mimesis of the Kafka joke, that it dawned on me that I was the alien to Humanity.

It just is one of the many primitive dimensions of US thought that “good faith” is taken to be sincerity; a bald, guileless “belief” in one’s intended meaning.
