10 years ago, Sir Geoffrey Bindman, who recently passed away, wrote this piece, based on a conference I organised commemorating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta and 50th anniversary of the first Race Relations Act

In 2001, Iain Duncan Smith and David Davis expelled Conservatives (described as a 'purge of rightwing extremists') with 'inflammatory views on race' such as the *voluntary* repatriation of ethnic minorities

In 2025, such policies are apparently too liberal

Image from the below article, indicating that between 1966 and 2021, UK Cabinet members had the following educational qualifications

Oxford: 26.5%
Cambridge: 18.1%
LSE/Edinburgh/Durham: 10.4%
Other universities: 34.1%
Did not attend university: 10.8%

My colleagues and I did some interviews with ethnic minorities in the run up to Brexit. Our key findings were that while they were more likely to vote Remain, this was less due to a 'pro EU' disposition and more due to concerns about nativism

Yeah, tho you don't want the US government writing up things like this, however tantalising the wording of these events

A well known 1983 election poster

42 yrs on, the opposing view 'You can't be British/English if you're Black' is still defended. Powell & the Monday Club did then call for *voluntary* repatriation, a view the Thatcher govt rejected

Many of course disagree(d) w/the poster's claims for other reasons

Here's the relevant chart from the above report. It's rare to see such a clear, consistent slope in any social trend. That segregation is decreasing is perhaps the best evidence, least controversial social fact of modern Britain

On the issue of housing costs, see our @trustforlondon.bsky.social chart, showing that after housing costs (blue dots), child poverty in these areas rises to 40% or more

I followed up this piece with another on why lumping all 'nonwhite' groups together leads to bad analysis and bad policy on segregation

www.runnymedetrust.org/blog/when-is...

I acknowledged that choice can lead to segregation, including in schools, tho noted some less observed aspects of this

I stand by this conclusion. Of course there are challenges, but in neighbourhoods across Britain, people of different ethnicities are getting along, and forging a positive sense of community to which all can contribute and thrive

We can do better than grievance identity politics

From Wikipedia:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monday_...

The Monday Club policy was of voluntary repatriation, in 2001 seen as a policy too far right by the right of the Conservative Party

Turning to one intra-minority shared interaction, Muslims & Jews do not typically live in the same places. The area of Manchester which saw the horrific antisemitic attack on Yom Kippur yesterday is one of the exceptions

Reading the government announcement on post secondary or higher-level learning, the line is that the new target is 'up from' the current target of 50%

Taking into account the 'sub-target' of 10% being apprenticeships, that implies an higher education of rate of 56%

In a 1987-88 debate G A Cohen noted an anti-anti-racist tendency to use a 'brinkmanship rhetoric of withdrawable insinuation' and warned that yes, of course, prejudice has deep psychological roots, w/ the 'power to insult, maim and kill'

This sort of tendency is now very mainstream

Yes, there are gaps in earnings btw free school meal graduates & their more advantaged peers. At the same time, for every qualification level FSM pupils will on average earn significantly more

One interpretation: education improves outcomes for all, but doesn't overturn structual class inequalities

Below is their population pyramid

What happened? Why so few young but so many middle-aged White Irish? Did all the people in the middle not have children?

Obviously not. Rather, their children & grandchildren have opted for other boxes in the census, with White British their most likely identity
June 21, 2025 at 8:37 AM
I wrote this almost a decade ago

'Segregation isn't where white people are a minority'

www.runnymedetrust.org/blog/segrega...

Those who now advocate that whiteness = Britishness then stated (at least publicly) that it was a well argued piece
