Over many interviews, the fox told Michael Scherer about how he plans to remake the henhouse defense system. Can he lead the security establishment he’s spent much of his life crusading against?

The claim that ‘leftist violence is just as scary as rightest violence’ may or may not be true but it’s very clearly not the same thing as ‘political violence is bad’

The shutdown gambit was Senate Democrats drawing to an inside straight. They got the card they needed. And then folded for some reason

Sophie pls

The story of the season in Sweden is IK fighting for promotion and Eric holding his lonely vigil, protecting the Uppsala goal from all assailants

4-1 at halftime, and both teams have hit the woodwork. Not the highest quality football we’ve ever seen but Eric is getting plenty of chances to wave his flag.

Spending a beautiful Ascension Day at the park. Staying away from the domkyrka though, just in case Magnus II happens to be around (cc @flatpacksweden.bsky.social )

Frodo's defining characteristic is his capacity to withstand temptation. But if he were just an ascetic, he would be quite boring. What makes him interesting is the extraordinarily delicate balance between desire and resistance that's necessary to complete the task.

The thing that makes Gollum’s story truly tragic is the tiny sliver of self that remains, screaming in the dark, after everything else has been ground into oblivion.

Already down 0-1 after a pretty abysmal goal kick routine turned into a goal in the 5th minute. But Uppsala coming into the game a bit now

American democracy is under serious and existential threat. Massive damage has already been done, and will take decades to repair even in the best case. We are shockingly close to a total breakdown

Denethor is a great man, but also terrible. He stands firm under incredible pressure, until finally he cracks. And when he breaks, he breaks hard. Tolkien provides a wonderful portrayal of a complicated character.

Without Merry, Boromir is never redeemed, Strider tries to follow Frodo (with disastrous consequences) or else the Fellowship goes to Minis Tirith (with disastrous consequences). Gandalf never revives Théoden and the ents are never roused. Saruman defeats Rohan. Angmar never dies. Sauron wins.
April 21, 2025 at 6:49 PM
Théoden's best scenes are the ones where he sets the world on fire with a battle hymn or unleashes on Saruman. But the thing that fully rounds him out as a character is his affection for Merry

It seems incredible that slime molds are capable of performing intelligence without a brain. But are we really so different?

Old habits die hard, so I’m just not used to seeing the Pride obliterate teams like this. But holy cow that's a paddlin'

I used to say ironically that Douglas Adams was the most interesting philosopher of my lifetime. What this post presupposes is... maybe he is.

How should we think about creativity once it becomes clear that machines can actually produce deeply imaginative works without any of the friction or struggle that we thought made those things so special?
