The mane covers special pores that suck in the water and mix it with body fluids to make viscous liquids they spit out. It uses this special mucus to hunt as well. They will live by either sea or fresh water and use the mane to keep their skin from drying out on land.

Royal Ludroths are male leaders of their bask sporting a distinctive mane. It’s made of deteriorated scales that have hair like fibers from dead cells. This creates the mesh like structure that holds water. Thorns lay inside that be can moved create more surface for water grip.
