"... her graceful portrait, all smiles and cashmere" - Edith Wharton

Personal account. Here for the literature, coffee, and social satire.
We’re not a Cocomel*n household, we’re a Nana’s original 1964 LP of Mary Poppins household

January Reads 📚❄️ Off to a better start this year. The Hand that First Held Mine and Scaffolding were favorites. The Wilderness too, which I read in one sitting last night.

Daunt Books makes mini kids totes, so now my 3yo is perfecting the art of schlepping by filling hers before we go out. But also now it prompts things like, “I want to take the bus because my Daunt Books est heavy.”

If we’re going to have to move photo apps too, am I going to need to post my needlepoint here too? Maybe? Anyway, here’s my Sunday morning needlepoint color palette.

Excited to introduce my daughter to Frog and Toad, not because it was dear to me as a child (I did not know it), but because you all posted so much about it on tumblr and Twitter in the 2010s and made it look SO cozy and relatable that I’ve been waiting to discover it too.

Bringing Up Bébé made a big thing out of French crèche lunches, but I feel like Geneva isn’t doing too badly with its toddler meals either.

First two reads of the year. Lauren Elkin’s Scaffolding was wonderful — beautifully written and poignant and just my type of thing with its ties to architecture and home. Tessa Hadley’s The Party less so… I did not like its conclusion, but alas.

An excellent read. I’m not usually one for dystopias, but Ali Smith captured everything I’m spending a lot of time worrying about — the decline of critical thinking, intellectual collapse due to AI, overconsumption, compliance, etc. — and made me feel like I wasn’t insane. Plus horses.

Wanted to play Squeeze’s “Cool for Cats” over this photo and now I’m going down a New Wave spiral attempting to put a wintry mix together (is it even possible??)

Working from home and spending all day at my desk without the existential dread of writing a master’s thesis or the stress of working from home with a baby??? A long forgotten joy that I’m so happy to have back in my life to relish.

I mostly kept my needlework and crafts off the other site, but let’s not do that here because it’s been a big outlet for me these past few years. Mixed it with my love of labeling while watching tv last night and embroidered my first basket.
