My very vulnerable essay essentially about the extended brain fart that is perimenopause has found a home in a national newspaper. Online and in print. Thrilled, but anxious.

See you on the science and history panels! Excited to say yes to scary things (public speaking, flying) that mean I get to explore a part of the country I've never seen before.

Obsessed with these bronze art nouveau dancing scarf lady bookends. I'm so happy I trusted my gut and snapped them up at the thrift store. $25 is a bit more than I usually spend on my little thrift trinkets, but some googling tells me they're worth around $150 to $500.

I feel like Chicken Little, but as a science journo, what can I do but write? open.substack.com/pub/oliviaca...

That's what reminded me I needed to read the first one! I'm really loving it.

Reading!

One of my main goals as an author is to sell enough books so they'll let me write another one. Currently, it looks like that's not going to happen since my publisher is not happy with the sales of my second book. A sophomore slump. I'm open to promo ideas & would appreciate any shares of this post!

But what about reading for pain?

TFW you write about the history of women in science, but you're a sci-fi nerd. (My alumni mag profiled me about my books; I wore Godzilla to the photoshoot)

Not Meta suggesting I may want to buy these replicas of bawdy badges worn by medieval pilgrims that I wrote about for @atlasobscura.com a few years ago. Something I might actually be interested in purchasing!? (Especially the ye olde bag of d*cks pin)

Also, requesting our books at the library is another great (free) way to support us authors!

My second book's first orange flag! My audiobook is number one in women's history on Amazon!! I don't know what happened to make it go from ranking as the 97,422th selling book on Amazon on June 7 to the 113th selling book on June 9, but I'll take it.

It's the 18th anniversary of my Costco membership. My relationship with Costco is longer than my marriage. But only just. I joined to buy cheesecakes to have for my wedding cake. And now, Costco is the reason I'm a @nytimes.com bestselling author.

Let's talk book covers! My publisher went with covers more associated with historical fiction to try to entice that readership to embrace nonfiction. But not having more traditional "history" covers means I'm very often not taken seriously as an author.
