today I learned that Sooty Terns very rarely touch the water when they are out at sea foraging, but they will sometimes perch on the back of surfacing sea turtles

Just past the surf break at ala moana beach, a flock of 20 or so manu o kū (white terns) foraging - looks like they’re maybe grabbing things close to the surface?

This is a mōlī (Laysan Albatross) chick who fledged from Kīlauea Point NWR last summer. It’s one of the few protected seabird colonies in the main Hawaiian islands. The entire biologist team (+ their only facilities management person) at this NWR was fired with no warning yesterday.

From a recent trip to Oregon - walking through a riparian trail @ Dorris Ranch. Birds were pretty quiet when all of a sudden a cacophony of chickadees, kinglets, and a few nuthatches all started going off - all because of this tiny little sharp-shinned hawk!
