"Synthetic public" seems like an amplification of pathologies of the current electoralism/popularism trends in politics when the public opinion is seen as something external, unchangeable, as a puzzle you have to solve (or a video game AI you play against).

But that's the point. She can't imagine herself taking part in Somalian culture and identity in any way even if she had been born there. She imagines herself growing in a gated expat community or something like that.

The discourse about IDs in the UK is a bit wild for people coming from countries with internal IDs. It's also annoying, because the BRP was a great ID card, and now I need to figure out what to use as an ID after getting the citizenship. (I don't drive.)

Also "lose his country" is quite dehumanising for Ukrainians who live in Ukraine and fight for Ukraine and whom Zelensky represents. (Would Independent write in the same way about France or Spain?)
