I recommend the LD3 in this case, of the Gotharman units. I have a send from my daw running into mine. It has the usual modulation sources, but you also get 32 control tracks too, assignable to basically anything (even cv!). The morph feature is ace. It's a very deep device. Love the Lyra

It’s a granular workstation with sampler, fx, sequencer and synth.
Can it drone? Yes. Though, I tend to use it to make rhythmic tracks.

The LD3 is a much more out of this world advanced device, but the LD2 has this ancient lost brutalist technology vibe to it.
