Games are indeed playable with Nvidia GPUs on Fedora, and perhaps any modern Linux. The average FPS is lower than on Windows, but it's still fine as I don't need 100% out of the GPU all the time. If I do, e.g. for simracing in VR, I reboot to Windows. The other 90% of the time I use Fedora.

I use Btrfs, which is not a fast filesystem in itself, and I use it with LUKS encryption, which could effectively kill the IO speeds with any filesystem. I don't know if the IO had any effect on performance in my case. Also, I haven't done any performance tuning, nor have tried other Proton/Wine.

I also played a number of games without the built-in benchmark tool. DOOM and The Outer Worlds perform almost identically on both OSes. Counter-Strike 2 does slightly better on W11, but it's still over 250 fps on both OSes. I finished Weird West 2 days ago - 165 fps with Proton Experimental.

Forza Horizon 4. Benchmark. Preset: Ultra. Average FPS with Proton Experimental - 223. And the game won't run on Windows 11, lol. A quick search confirmed that I was not alone, FH4 and W11 are not a good match.

The native version of Shadow of the Tomb Rider works fine, but lacks raytracing, fortunately the Windows version with DX12 + Proton is an option.

Shadow of the Tomb Rider. Benchmark. Preset: Highest, DLSS: off. Average FPS on W11 - 203, Linux native - 207 (+1.97%), Proton Experimental - 153 (-24.63%). Preset: Highest, DLSS: Quality. W11 - 219, Proton Experimental - 167 (-23.74%).

In terms of gameplay, I didn't notice much of a difference between playing Cyberpunk 2077 on either OS. However, W11 wins the benchmark.

Cyberpunk 2077. Benchmark. Preset - Ultra. Average FPS on W11 - 135.71, Proton Experimental - 83.91 (-38.17%). Preset - Ray Tracing: Ultra. W11 - 98.564. Proton Experimental - 95.81 (-2.77%). The raytracing preset uses DLSS, which may equalize performance.

I am not a hardcore gamer, although games are a big part of my life (I have worked in game development for almost 10 years now). But I don't like Windows, so I can accept some performance loss for not using Windows, as long as native games and games with Proton are still maintain stable fps.

Yes, as a workaround, you can convert a source mp4 with h264/265 and aac to a mov using codecs supported by the free version of davinci resolve via ffmpeg. The other solution is buying the studio version, it supports h264/265 on linux, but it still doesn’t support aac though.

It technically does, but the free version on Linux does not support H.264 and H.265, while afaik at least H.264 is available in the free version on Windows.

SteamOS is an immutable distribution, it’s by design not what most of Linux installations would look like out of the box. But, anyway, idk why anyone would want to switch others to their OS/hardware. Just let everyone use whatever suits them.

Kind of did. Content delivery became much cheaper over years, and market got much bigger. Marginality of a sold copy tremendously raised over years, but on the other side development became more expensive for many reasons, including (but not limited to) inflation. One overlapped with another.

Many Xbox exclusives are already confirmed for PlayStation/Switch, or rumored to be coming to PlayStation, or available on PC. Unless you need to play all of the Gears of Wars right today, there is no reason to buy an Xbox (tho hard to find a reason to buy a PlayStation too).

Similar to any other genre => dead in AAA, alive in AA/indie. Pretty much every year there are a few decent releases. From top of my mind, Robocop in 2023 was great, playing for a walking turret was interesting. Battlebit Remastered (also 2023) is cool. Ultrakill, Warhammer Boltgun, etc.

Playing video games instead of sleeping and consuming content is an easy solution. Kidding aside, portable consoles really help to keep playing as it’s quick to start/pause/resume gaming session. But yeah, work, adult duties, sport, other hobbies don’t leave much spare time for games, unfortunately.

First 2 hours are a bit weak. Right after opening of the main story, NPCs start giving quests to build beds, defense structures, save a village, etc. While player really should just go to the Diamond city. But it gets much better then.
I recommend to play New Vegas too. Story-wise, it’s amazing.

After SD update or the recent update of Fallout 4? I didn’t notice difference from SteamOS/Proton updates, but the last update of Fallout 4 just made everything worse. The only reason I kept playing F4 was that it worked great out of the box on SD, but seems Bethesda wants me to play modded NV.
