At first I remember your paper subscription got you online access as well. Who led the change to giving it way online? It didn’t make sense and as you say it trained a whole generation. Even the word “paywall” sounds like an obstacle one has to defeat

I read Hillbilly Elegy when it first came out and I do recall at the time that it read as condescending and judgmental instead of insightful or sympathetic.

I must have been 10 when NBC broadcast it late night here in rural South Carolina in the early eighties. I guess I was a little dense but I genuinely thought it was made by our state public broadcasting station SCETV. I remember thinking how cool that so many funny people lived here🤪
