There was not an indepedent exit. The Spelthorne Independent Group, who won a councillor in 2023 in the ward, stood again. Election Maps just doesn't consider independents to have continuity unless it's literally the same person.

Just a note, there was an independent candidate in this by-election, and they stood for the same independent group as the candidate in 2023 (and the same candidate stood in Ashford East last year).

I don't think it's accurate to say the independent is new, as all of these independents in Spelthorne are part of the same political grouping and operate as a political party.
