Absolutely this. One of humanity’s most annoying default settings is not understanding how subjectivity works.

At the end of the day you do what works for you as a band, and most music fans don’t actually care. But as someone who did the backing track thing I wish I could go back and at least hire a samples guy like Slipknot have, and have them implement them live.

Oh and zero backing vocals on tracks. 8/8

Obviously it’s down to genre as to whether the music needs augmentation from layers that you cannot pull off live or don’t have the money to hire someone to play live.

But bands playing their first shows with a full orchestra of tracks blaring, wall of unintelligible noise in a pub? Come on now. 7/

I saw a hardcore band play a sold out show in a small room above a pub a few nights ago, no backing tracks, raw as fuck, just vibing off of each other and the crowd, and it was fantastic. I haven’t enjoyed a gig that much in a long time. 6/

However, and this is gonna be where it gets more subjective, at smaller shows, I will absolutely have a higher level of enjoyment based on how much of the show is a group of band mates vibing off of each other and if there are fewer pre-recorded layers being utilised, even better. 4/

Those big theatre shows that have lots of money and power behind, I’m not there for spontaneity. I’m there to see a grand stage show, like theatre.

For that, so long as the band on stage is playing their specific parts live, I don’t care how many backing layers they have. 3/

I’m at a point where I don’t see all live music as the same thing. You have the smaller club and bar gigs, which I see the way I have always seen live music.

However the big shows, rehearsed choreography, pyro and lights shows, everything timed to perfection, I now see those more like theater. 2/
