Old Man Gaming
@oldmangaming76.bsky.social
An old gamer who has played games for 40+ years starting with an obsession with a Donkey Kong Jnr console and now predominantly games on PC. I have random musings about the gaming industry including games and the general zeitgeist
I am not a PvP player and didn't buy or play @ARCRaidersGame past the playtest as I guessed this is exactly what would happen. I was surprised by the friendliness initially but knew it wouldn't last and have been proved right. I hope Embark add a PvE server at some point

I surmised and have been proven right that their PvPvE game has become a PvP game where PvE players are not invited or are taken advantage of for small yet hollow victories in battles that are one sided because one person is not even playing along.

Going back in time the number of games released is dwarfed by the releases we have every year now. Releases on @steampowered.com this year are set to top 19K. Trying to select a Game of the Year from that number is an impossible task. Many reviewers cannot even play all the top rated games alone.

Although I feel, and this seems to be a ever increasing consensus, that the @geoffkeighley.bsky.social ceremony is not representative of the overall gaming community, I am also aware, especially in a year such as this with so many good games available, that consensus is near impossible.

Are you going to need care packages from Europe for this addiction? I am sure you can sneak them through customs as a gift package?

They have made great strides with it but it needs to be Windows without the bloat and more aimed at gaming and then they can think about creating a serious console to sell commercially. But I still am not convinced that it is @valvesoftware.com main drive. Steam OS seems to be their baby

I get the impression Valve made devices like the Deck that they would want themselves, for people like them. They seemed to be pleasantly surprised by the sales and the uptake of the Steam Deck. Steam OS is as important as the devices I feel. Long term they could go retail depends if Gabe gets bored

Exactly this. Steam OS is not 100% ready to compete with the console OSs of Xbox and PlayStation (although Xbox's new direction in this is also lacking and needs work). Pointless selling a 'console' if it can't play games with anti-cheat. I really like Steam OS and the Deck but the OS is not there

Apologies I have asked before but I figured it might have got missed so I will ask a last time if you have UK and Europe figures as well? Only I would be interested to see the differences if there are any.

I feel the pushback from the consumer should say all to these people about @steampowered.com. It isn't fanboyism but rather defence of an company that actually people feel caters for them. I wonder if the same could be said of the companies these execs run?

They neglect to see what the consumers who use Steam get from it or what they as publishers\developers get from it but rather it is more about the money they feel they are losing. Easy to cry 'monopoly' rather than acknowledge that there has never been a storefront that made the effort to compete

As a sidenote....... Play the game

You may have been asked this before, but do you ever have UK, Europe or any other numbers? Or is it purely US? Only asking as I would love to see the difference in audiences and games that are played.
