RAT, general nuisance, interested in (mostly) Scottish railways. Big fan of episode three of the Doctor Who serial 'Robot'. I make silly talking train stories on YouTube.

Been faffing about with the Haymarket set (that's basically all I can do at the moment in regards to the next episode. Realised after that the skyline is far too cluttered but hey ho, at least the tenements look more tenement-y!

ah yes i remember when auld lang syne had DEEP LORE
August 23, 2025 at 5:51 PM
well yeah you fucking idiots that's what happens when you put mark williams on the rails

It's a crew embellishment probably to brighten it up a little! The locomotive 'adopted' by Dunfermline High School is probably one of the more extreme examples of this!

Now all I need to do is justify this purchase by writing a 1948-51 set Auld Lang Syne episode...

I have spent hours staring at this thing. I put off varnishing it for days. And I put off weathering it for another few days...
April 3, 2025 at 5:53 PM
I got the new one (and at a bargain price too).

Very little needed to be done to what is - in my opinion - one of Hornby's best models to date!

I gave it a gloss varnish, a Bachmann screw-link coupling and weathering. Have I ruined a limited edition model? Yes. What are you going to do about it?
April 3, 2025 at 5:53 PM
There's a lot of fine tuning needed (especially with the smokebox door) but I'm quite pleased with this model.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!!!!

Another wave of model J36 pictures on the way soon...

The biggest challenge were the curly 6s. No company does them in a matching cream and no one does the bufferbeam numbers either. The solution was simple but fiddly - make my own using a regular 6 and the bottom of a 5 flipped upside down! The bufferbeam numbers were 2mm transfers.

I'd hoped to take these photos on set but it's inaccessible at this point in time 😢

Anyway, here's (WIP) 1948 Maude!

Now, I know what you're thinking: "God, that's so crusty! The Numbers aren't even spaced the same on either side!"

Well, yes... but so was the real thing!

More info in ALT text!

Read the Oakwood press book containing many of LBSC's stories some years ago - definitely a favourite read.

I can't help but laugh at the Wikipedia page though. "Hm. I wonder why someone would change their name to a feminine one and wear feminine clothing? A mystery to be sure!"

gutted that they cocked up the best livery. green looks too light and the buffer beam and buffer shanks aren't even green :(

Did You Know:

...that there's a Trainz model for Maude? Made by Andrew when the original series was still just about a thing and before either of us knew much of Maude's idiosyncrasies. I still think it's a lovely model - great for yeeting wagons...

Did You Know:

...I REALLY wanted to do some dockside scenes in the original series? The thing is I had no idea how to make something look dockside-y. These photos show a poor attempt.

Anyway, I made a pair of tugs - one is based on a local one, the other is... obvious.

Did You Know:

...that in almost every Auld Lang Syne episode there is some sort of Doctor Who cameo?

If you look very closely, you can spot the TARDIS, Romana II, the fourth Doctor, Peri, the Brig, and Ace in the first episode made in 2016.

The context of this is genuinely lost on me.

Happy St. Andrew's Day!

Did You Know:

...before being named after a general in 1919, Maude was named Andrew (after the patron saint of Scotland)? This breaks a little rule I have about having characters not sharing names with friends. Sorry, Andrew.

Did You Know:

...the 'corpse' of Jon Snowplough can be glimpsed at the beginning of 'Auld Acquaintance'? I like to think that this is technically the final joke in 'Save Our Snowplough...'

(Again, the photos had better be the right way up...)

And here are the three stations as they appear in the series.
November 27, 2024 at 7:00 PM
On a related note, the stations shown on Haig's branchline are connected by a theme. Can you figure it out?
November 27, 2024 at 7:00 PM
Did You Know:

The platforms and canopies used for Haymarket station and the junction for Haig's Branchline are actually from a 'Knapford' set I started making for a sequel to 'Thomas and the Fire Engine' that was abandoned.

(The photos better be the right way up...)

Did You Know:

The posters in 'Save Our Snowplough' reference different trains-with-faces series? Waterdown is, of course, a reference to 'Crossed Lines', Hayesbridge is a reference to 'The Rails on Which We Run', and Hackton is a reference to an as-yet-unmade series.

Did You Know:

Auld Lang Syne wasn't always called Auld Lang Syne!?

The title came quite late - so late in fact that, in my latest upload, you might just hear 2016 Stuart refer to the series as 'Haymarket'. Here's an evolution of the logos all made by Luke.

The conversation would also reveal why Maude had been borrowed - no one else was willing to work with Haig. Maude had heard that Haig had been exiled to the branch and was unpopular because he'd taken the name of a dead engine. The story was changed last minute to keep things simple.
