On the one hand I see the idea, that if you suck ass and lose a lot of souls you can summon stronger people to help you clear the area. On the other hand as you said it ruins co-op with friends and PvP becomes impossible

Breathing deep with your belly (diaphragmatic breathing) should help since it activates the parasympathetic nervous system which would bring your heart rate down. And you don't do just 3 breaths but do it repeatedly for several minutes.
