I would do time if I heard one of the shites who spent years telling us that getting into power at all costs was a virtue because "you can't do anything outside of government" now declaring that it's best to just take the rest of this parliament off.
The only argument against “Something Must Be Done” is “Starmer and Reeves have successfully ruined the government’s big opportunities to do difficult things that will pay off this term, Labour’s best hope is just to grit it out and make a change in January 2029 and hope they can Ardern it.

Do we know how that compares to usual numbers? I found this from a 2025 Times article moaning about the taxpayer paying too much for the policing of games:

He says "we will be holding to account those who prevented this visit", but the school's explanation for the postponement seems reasonable so he can't mean them. Is he going to to try to punish the protestors on the grounds that you can make a bad faith argument that they're being antisemitic?

There was an FT article yesterday that quoted an excerpt from Jonathan Powell's The New Machiavelli. Reading it I wondered how much influence he really believes Blair was able to exert on Bush and why anyone would think that Starmer my be able to replicate this approach with Trump.
"There are two approaches to trying to influence the Americans. The first is the French way, pioneered by General de Gaulle, which is to be as cussed as possible in the hope that the Americans will seek after you and pay a big price to bring you back on board. The other is the traditional British way, which is to try and stay as close as possible to the Americans in the hope of being included in their counsels. We opted for the latter, but there is a trade-off. If you want to exercise such influence, you have to keep quiet about it . . . Britain always has an alternative. It could adopt a declaratory foreign policy, as the French do, and win support around the world by saying things people want to hear. But that would result in our having less influence in Washington and less ability to change anything in the real world."

I really love this comment on a blog from someone claiming to be Duke's son, where he takes someone claiming to be Duke's niece to task for not knowing how much his dad hated Sammy Petrillo.
This "Duke's niece" person only deals with a minuscule portion of my dads career the lovingly funny send up of Martin and Lewis but as his son...he never wanted to speak of Sammy Petrillo and the whole 11 month teaming with him as he said was "a fucking nightmare"..he went on to do many things that my supposed cousin never My dad never quit for lack of work...he quit because he hated the guy and did a short stint with the Happy Jesters a sucessful Vegas lounge act that had money pouring in!...its all based around his short span with this Petriilo fellow...who in the family archives there is ONE picture of...perhaps this is Petrillo himself or someone relate to him...Petrillo also tried to float a story after my fathers passing that there was a reconciliation ...NOTHING could be further from the truth...My dad passed away at Cedars Sinai in MY ARMS...these nits crawling out of the woodwork are ridiculous! She didn't even get the year of his birth correct! This "writer" does not know my father's real career or main focal points in that career and life...and I know all my cousins.. but not this one...why is that? because this is B.S. and an infringement on his image and likeness...there is NO contact address for this "person" but I will contact this "blog" space
