In many cases, the reason why these blocks were cleared was because of their redlined status, which prevented banks from lending money for properties on those blocks. Because that redlined status resulted from ownership/occupation by people of color, the only way to remove it was via demolition.

An expansion could include the "Yes In My Alpha Quadrant" movement

About a decade ago, I saw a Planetizen thinkpiece about gentrification in San Francisco and the illustration was of this 100% extremely low income apt building in downtown Sacramento. Presumably they saw streetcar tracks & assumed it was SF?

Chalk It Up festival, Fremont Park, Sacramento CA: first time using my Cannondale compact cargo bike (the Electric Hooligan) for transportation of materials & myself to & from the art fest each day. Skips the parking blues & hauls lots of gear! @americanfietser.bsky.social

I hope that someday, America will have a holiday where all of us get together with friends and family, and eat soup, sandwiches, and milkshakes.

That would be very on-brand for Republican propaganda posts (the ship in the photo below is a Russian Kirov-class battlecruiser)

While there's still sexism in this poster's messaging (its implication of automatic transactional sex for draft resisters), it illustrates the principle of how this idea was successfully conveyed during the Vietnam War.

Having more late-night cafes like the ones we had Back In The Glory Days of the 1990s would be nice. The Instagram account for that coffee shop was...disappointing, to say the least. Bad AI slop art and hard creeper vibes.

Even more anarchist than the old Oakland, Antioch & Eastern Railway (later part of Sacramento Northern) interurban logo !

I'm trying to find anything about this that isn't terrible, and failing. Even their "history" explanation is bad (the city of Sacramento didn't exist yet when gold was discovered.) It's like the Kings' short lived "Roy Al" wasn't cringey enough.

On Saturday March 29, 6 PM, I'm giving a talk at Capital Books, 1011 K Street, Sacramento, titled "Sax & Violins, Sex & Violence: Music & Mayhem in the West End," a selection of stories from "Wicked Sacramento" and some as yet unpublished tales.

There's a group of folks trying to make more use of them--the central courtyard was designed as public space for events, which were fairly regular occurrences until maybe a decade ago. A few new tenants and a few bucks for tidying up & it could be a very cool public space again.

Chinatown is kind of a hidden treasure. Lots of potential for reuse & rehab of the buildings, which were mostly designed by Chinese-American architects from northern California.

They're already legal within walking distance of the CA legislature (photos taken in downtown/midtown Sacramento), we're waiting for the rest of CA to catch up.
