Volcanoes - Seismology - Acoustics

Earth Sciences New Zealand
Good morning #IAVCEI2025! I have two presentations for you today. I have a talk about the amazing acoustics of the Hunga eruption at 3.45, followed by a poster on the 2022 unrest episode at Taupō (which inc. a tsunami!) See you there!

The morning sunrise over the lake almost makes up for the lack of volcanoes in Geneva #IAVCEI2025

On the last leg of my journey to Geneva for #IAVCEI2025. Looking forward to meeting friends and learning new science!

Another photo from fieldwork on Friday. We were treated to awesome views like this while flying between spots: looking south over the Emerald Lakes, Red Crater, and Ngauruhoe, with Ruapehu poking out on the left. If you look closely you can see a few walkers on the Tongariro Crossing. #VolcanoMonday

Always love a chance to do some fieldwork. This was the view from the top of Ngauruhoe volcano today, looking north over Tongariro with Lake Taupō in the distance.

Beautiful summer day in the Taupō Volcanic Zone today. Four active volcanoes can be seen in this view from Tauhara.

Please bring out your best photos of birds looking straight into the camera! Sometimes they look goofy, sometimes they look intense.

A dapper looking Tūī I met last week while visiting the Coromandel. #birds

Queen of the Volcanoes.

I've always thought this explosion plume from Volcan de Colima in 2014 looked like a crown 👑 #VolcanoMonday

Always an exciting day at work when I get to hop into a helicopter to go check out activity at Whakaari volcano. Here's the view into the crater from today.

Red hot lava drawing curves in the air after a small explosion at Stromboli volcano, 2016. #VolcanoMonday

This figure alone tells you the whole story. Those median regression lines make no sense. I cannot understand how stuff like this gets through peer review.

Kia Ora to all my new followers over the weekend 👋 I should probably reintroduce myself. I work on volcanoes by looking at volcanic earthquakes and sound waves. I also help monitor active volcanoes across Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿

If the plural for goose is geese, does that mean the plural for moose is meese? #AskingForAFriend

Stunning weather for my first day in Anchorage. I'm here for the #SSA24 conference, and I'm looking forward to meeting and learning what other seismologists have been up to!

Gorgeous sunset over Taupō and the National Park volcanoes.

Today was a good day to be working in the field. View from Te Maari on Tongariro. ☀️🌋🇳🇿

Absolutely stunning webcam views of the sunsets over Taranaki, Tongariro and Ruapehu volcanoes earlier this evening. Almost like a Turner painting. ⚒️🌋🇳🇿

Another gorgeous summer day in Taupō. Always love that view to the volcanoes. 🇳🇿🌋⚒️

skjalftalisa.vedur.is is a superior (and official) website for exploring seismic activity detected by IMO in Iceland. Here's what the dyke activity looks like. One of the buttons in top right brings you to plots of lat/long/depth over time.

At Villarrica volcano in Chile, I always loved looking at the summit to watch the individual puffs of gas from the small explosions in the vent. Like a living, breathing creature. #VolcanoMonday 🌋

A lot of people balk at the idea of getting up at 5.30 am to go rowing, but it's worth it for sunrise views across Lake Taupō to the volcanoes in the distance, just like this morning. 🌋🇳🇿

Beautiful day to check on activity within Whakaari volcano. 🌋🇳🇿

Hey 👋 I'm Oliver and based in Taupō, Aotearoa New Zealand. I use earthquakes and sound waves to help understand the physics of volcanic unrest and eruptions 🌋
