Returning from leave to officially start my sabbatical!

Mostly working on paper edits today to get in before a deadline, but also starting the day with some bell hooks in the sun…

… and a grant rejection to really kick things off on the right note 🫠

As of today I am officially on research sabbatical for a year! I’ll miss teaching but am excited to have a year to read, write, and think…

A qualitative research question!

Often the methods I’ve used necessitate recording & verbatim transcripts

We’re planning work with professionals in many roles to map systems in practice, & I wonder if field notes might suffice?

Also looking in literature but I’m keen to hear people’s reflections!

An energising trip this week to Cardiff to give a talk on declining youth mental health at @wolfsoncentre.bsky.social and spend time exploring public health lenses and opportunities with Rhiannon Evans at @deciphercentre.bsky.social

Heading off to make copious notes and explore grant pathways!

In Cardiff for a couple of days this week to give a talk and spend some time with collaborators. Was pleasantly surprised by the view from my hotel!

Someone who I shall not name just deleted half an email by trying to chase the sunshine ☀️

A clearly very serious discussion with @margaritap.bsky.social on various mental health research plans at our @educationuom.bsky.social away day yesterday

Apparently my stack of notes and various desk items are a great sunny nap spot for this very rude colleague 🌞

Winding down teaching and dissertation support this year feels odd as I prep for research sabbatical next academic year. Felt sentimental in final office hours this aft, then dropped and broke a cup I bought for my office when I started as a lecturer. Annoyed with myself but felt weirdly fitting?

Five years on from the start of the pandemic we’re seeing lots of media reflections - I chatted to Christina Hopkinson for her piece in The Telegraph, where she weighs up ways of thinking about what happened for young people’s mental health during that time: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/03...

Great to see our recent piece on advancing mixed methods in mental health research featured in last week’s round up from @nboyce.bsky.social. Have a read of the full article here: doi.org/10.1136/bmjm...

First half marathon run this weekend in Paris! A much shorter weekend than planned with the Eurostar disruptions but at least it included a running tour of the city🏃‍♀️

Great to see our recent paper featured in @nboyce.bsky.social’s latest Friday newsletter

Filled my second no reward chart! This final sticker today was for carving out and actively preserving proper time to make progress with something very exciting (represented pleasingly here with the tenth cat’s little ball of wool). Time to think up a reward!

An email I forgot I sent to myself in amongst late night thoughts about a project…

A good reminder to revisit this one page piece on the importance of stupidity in scientific research: web.stanford.edu/~fukamit/sch...

New research project proposal mapping means a new notebook (and trusty pastel highlighters) - having a day dedicated to beginning to map out my thoughts on paper… 🖊️

Maus and I battling through this British cold by pinning ourselves against the nearest heat source to snooze and read, respectively 😺

Just one puffy cat sticker to go on my “saying no” reward card - a practice borrowed from @smhall.bsky.social as one of many efforts to find a good work/life balance!

Ha, I’d like to say it was for my hot takes on youth mental health but it was almost certainly my embroidery 🪡
