This article discusses the harms that the global South faces with the expansion of AI development, mentioning how we must avoid a situation of "digital extractivism" that strains natural resources away from residents and the environment to data centres

Not to be overly political, but it is astounding how a compromise of data at this scale can happen to a country like the United States, and that is was relatively easy to find this information.
It gets worse.

This Signal situation is just the tip of the iceberg of incompetence in this administration.

This policy brief discusses how the EU's merger control system needs strengthening to address the risks posed by big tech acquisitions of smaller but potentially disruptive companies. It advocates for shifting the burden of proof to the acquisition companies

I think there is a very clear divide between people who are apprehensive about hastily adopting new technology into their routines and are skeptical, and then there are the people who can even manage to rationalize this.

This, along with "renaming" the Gulf of Mexico as "Gulf of America" in accordance with Trump goes to show how media platforms will abandon any notion of democracy without regulation. They do not have the people's best interests in mind, and they never have.

We need to be rethinking the notion of the "Free market" through a "platform economy" framework when thinking about digital platforms; platforms are replacing markets, which serves only the needs of those in power because platform owners have specific agendas, and markets don't.
This point from Lina Khan's excellent op-ed on competition in AI can't be repeated enough, given how susceptible policymakers are to Big Tech's innovation claims. Market concentration and centralisation are not and never have been a recipe for disruptive innovation.

I don't think discussions about how government needs to step in to regulate hyper-capitalistic and monopolistic platforms took into account what would happen if those same people *became* the government. When the dominant form of revenue from platforms is advertisements

It's crazy how we have avoided privatization of healthcare in Canada but have allowed the vet industry to get to the point of oligarchy. Pricing pet owners out of care that used to be affordable and essentially offering euthanasia as the only alternative is so dystopian
