Thrilled to see Mary Callery’s 1946 bronze sculpture “Acrobats: Study for a Monument” today at the Grey Art Museum. The open spaces, sinuous rhythm, and fused female figures are transporting. From the back, the figures appear androgynous. Sculpture in storage.

Juan Hamilton and Georgia O'Keeffe's relationship compels analysis. Friendships with close women friends that O'Keeffe maintained for many years were severed because of her involvement with Hamilton. Hamilton also withheld archival documents from scholars until 2020, when he auctioned them off.

Painter Hilda Belcher's portrait of painter Tony Nell. ca. 1910-1920s. "Our pictures--Tony's and mine--were both accepted by the American Water color Society; we've all been patting Tony on the back, as it will be her first exhibition." (Belcher Family Archive, with permission)

Antonia (Tony) Nell (1881-1960) was another student artist living at the same boarding house as Georgia O'Keeffe. One of her paintings is currently exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Gallery 773).

This is an apt depiction of what it must have been like for women to be art students at The Students League of NY in 1908.
From the 1908 Fakirs Catalogue. The Fakirs were an irreverent student group that parodied current artists and their art works and raised money for League scholarships.
