Congratulations to the 2025 Toronto Blue Jays who came ever so close to winning the World Series title. It was a magical run for a team that had its share of ups and downs. Looking forward to next season!

The World Series trophy might be presented tonight. It's history dates back to 1967 when the Cardinals won the title,. However, the trophy (called the Commissioner's Trophy) only got that name in '85. That year the Royals beat the Jays in the ALCS then the Cardinals in the World Series.

After last night's win, the Blue Jays are 1 win away from a World Series title. If successful, the Jays will achieve something they haven't done in 32 years, The team has already overcome a series deficit in the ALCS, but now they have the advantage and need to win one game (and have two to do so).

Counting outs and paying attention to where the Mariners were in the line-up (and who was in the bullpen) was a fun exercise last night after the Jays took the lead.
Here's Rance Mulliniks talking about the second-last game of the 1985 season when the Jays were about to clinch the division.

Forty years ago, the Jays jumped out to a two-games to none lead in the 1985 ALCS only to lose game four on the road. They’d win game five to take what seemingly would be an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the series with the final two games (if necessary) at home.

1985 may hold the key for success this year
What can the 2025 Blue Jays learn from 1985 Kansas City Royals who overcame a two-game deficit in the ALCS?

Can the 2025 Jays learn some lessons from their ALCS opponents in 1985 (KC Royals)? The Royals were down two games to nothing to start that series. They would lose game four too but come back to win the series and eventually the World Series. Steve Balboni remembers the series well.

Beating the Yankees for the division title and now in the divisional series casts some similarities to 1985 when the Jays held off the Yankees for the division on their way to the ALCS. Now, the 2025 Jays await the winner of the Tigers/Mariners ALDS series.

In 1985, the Jays quickly jumped out to a two games advantage against the Royals. Taking the first game 6-0 and game two by a score of 6-5. They'd lose game three, 6-5 before winning game four 3-1. 1985 was the first year, MLB had extended the ALCS series to a best-of-seven.

Despite ending the 1985 regular season with a record of 99-62 (one game was not played), the Jays didn't have a great finish to the regular season. They went 1-5 in the last 6 games. The win on Saturday October 5/85 clinched the division... and really that's all that matters, doesn't it?

This year's Jays wrap up a series against the Kansas City Royals today. The Royals were their American League Championship opponent back in 1985. The ALCS used to be a best of 5 prior to 1985, but that year was extended to a 7-game series. The 4th win in the series proved elusive for the Jays.
