I can kinda see why one might feel the need to write that Against Incentives blog when there's a significant chunk of ttrpg players seem to approach their PCs as a amoral automatons as opposed to characters capable of parsing straightforward moral choices.

This is why I've always been left so cold by Critical Role, because it's even more obvious in its attempt to do so. Music and cinematography are one thing, but when it's a bunch of performers hooting and hollering to signal that I should care it just gets annoying

No idea. Like, it's really not all that exceptional a game and you'd think the sub that constantly makes a big deal about people overperscribing PBTA and FITD would have some self awareness

My personal favourite is people recommending Vaesen despite never having played it or kinda disliking it and it being a completely inappropriate recommendation anyway

Like I just saw someone there complaining about unfair balance in PF2e (a game that's pretty weighed in the PCs' favour if you actually follow the encounter building guidelines) because they keep getting overshadowed by the OP GMPCs and buddy, the system clearly ain't the problem here.

Not to mention how much of that prosperity has been derived from exploitation and colonialism

And like even if we are living in the most peaceful period of human history, it clearly isn't peaceful enough and won't get better without collective effort to improve things further. Shit doesn't just happen on its own.

I really enjoyed it and I'm sad it didn't do well because there was so much potential for sequels.

Yeah. People treat social media as though they were shouting at the TV, but well, they're not.

For sure. It's genuinely strange how people place unstructured play (an abstract idea) as even without a game, play is not independent of context as you said, especially when those people make games which are necessarily a novel structure for play. Are people so traumatised by D&D being bad?
November 20, 2025 at 2:30 PM
Yeah. You're making a game, not play. The players do that part.

If OP isn't American, I'd be genuinely shocked. Nobody else talks like this (except for people trying to sound American I suppose), but also how is ACoTaR her first exposure to fairies?

iron in Celtic cultures and yeah, I can kinda see why people thought it was basically magical because so many of iron's physical properties are kinda wild.

Encoding knowledge in metaphor and story makes a lot of sense, particularly for oral cultures. Then of course, those stories are iterated and become more about the stories themselves over time, but that's just how we do. I was listening to a podcast about druids recently and they were talking about

I don't need to actually believe in the Sluagh to know that going for a nighttime walk in horrible howling winds is a bad idea, but it certainly helps emphasise the point.

This is how we are with fairies in Ireland. Do we believe in that stuff? No, but do we wanna piss them off? Also no.

The accents are solid. The pronunciations of Irish and Irish inspired words are rough though

I was gonna say that they should go obscure then and adapt something like Dwarf Fortress but I think that's just Fraggle Rock

It's fine when turns are like 15 seconds rather than Lancer's 15 minutes.
