Metro-North expanding to Albany got me thinking. And I've a question for those more in the know about rail and policy in NYC…would it be feasible to run a metro-north train from Penn up to the Hudson line at Spuyten Duyvil making more stops in Manhattan on its way uptown? Voila! west side subway!

The latter did not happen in the American Revolution (George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison became presidents), but it did in the French Revolution (with the demise of Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre) and, in time, in the Russian Revolution (with multiple purges and the assassination of Leon Trotsky) as well.

Even in the purple light, people must stand around, some in very large groups between retractable belt stanchions. It is reminiscent of JFK's Terminal 1 after 9/11. Beautiful architecture now secondary to security theater. But here, the theater is wrought by sheer incompetence rather than fear.
Moynihan Train Hall. Lots of people milling about. A large group being herded towards one narrow escalator down to their track minutes before departure. The light is purple, for some reason. No useful signage visible anywhere.

Moynihan Train Hall, looking beautiful in violet shaded lights reflecting off its glass canopy. It is reminiscent of the lost skylights of McKim Mead & White's Penn Station especially in the later years before demolition when it looked very modern. However, unlike the former the latter lacks several prosaic features that are common worldwide in train halls/stations/termini. Benches for waiting. Central timetables to see how long you must wait. Clear track assignments for when you're done waiting. Tracks that are easily accessible and as comfortable as the train hall itself. And lastly, trains that arrive on those tracks at frequent enough intervals to whisk you to your destination in comfort that you ask yourself "why did I ever drive?".
