Just thinking how a minor adjustment to the position of the two actors would allow you to accomplish this, forcing the one enemy to retreat in a sense and allowing for quick blows in succession.

If I may— if you’re animating a fight scene it might behoove (hehe deer puns) you to widen the swing of the pole weapon to use the guarding advantage in pushing back the enemy on the right, this allows for a quick return once the strike is completed and closes the potential counterattack that opens.
