"And I am a dream come true." Molly declares.

A young, pre-transition author awakes deep beneath the sea. She is dressed in teenage boy clothing: jeans, t-shirt, and an assortment of rubber band bracelets around one wrist. Her clothes and hair wave in the water like the seaweed behind her, and off in the distance she sees a magical kingdom enclosed in a bubble.

Narration: When I was a kid, I had this dream...

"Help me, please!" Exclaims a young woman who looks like she could be her sister. Her hair is pulled back into a poofy ponytail, except for her mop of bangs. She wears a tight long-sleeve shirt with the sleeves pushed up to her elbows and tight jeans. "The priest is trying to trap me here, he won't listen to me!"

"It took a while..." reads the narration over a scene of a Catholic priest sitting on his thrown, resting his chin against one hand in deep concentration. Her shadow is cast over him, showing her pleading desperately with her hands. "...but I talked him out of it."

Our narrator and the girl now sit in a completely different setting on big poofy beanbag chairs with decorative curtains draped around a giant glass wall that separates them from the ocean. Seaweed sways peacefully behind it in the ocean. The two friends are having an animated conversation and cracking each other up.

Narration: The girl and I were inseparable after that.

The narrator sits upright in bed, looking haggard. Her room casts strong, menacing shadows across her wall and over her.

Narration: My waking life was less idyllic.

Now in a great, fantastical forest with giant, twisty trees, our narrator and her friend clamber along an outstretched branch. The environment feels cool and nurturing.

Narration: But I found joy in my imagination. And I was never alone.

"Hey." She asks as the two traipse across a long, thick branch. "What's your name, anyway?"

"Call me Molly." She replies.

"Ok, but like, who are you?" Our protagonist presses. "Why are you here?"

"What a great question." Answers Molly as the two stop to take in the view. They are the size of specs compared to the enormous double moons that hang low over the tops of distant mountains and the skeletal alien creatures that wade through a lake.

Narration: As an adult I found new ways to explore my mind.

A mushroom grows next to the narration.

Narration: In my quest for self-knowledge, I encountered my shadow.

The mushroom's stalk grows downward, rooting through the hairline and forehead of a giant screaming face. A horizontal eye sits in the center of the forehead, framed by the mushroom's roots. The eyebrows and eye slits on either side of the single eye all squeeze together in agony. A liquid drains from either eye slit, screaming, "I WANT TO BE FREE!"

The priest's head is framed by the open screaming mouth as he looks at us with extreme judgement. He wears a small braid down the side of his face, like our narrator has. Halo-ing around the priest's head are the words "I MUST CONTAIN MYSELF"

"NO!" Screams the other eye slit from the giant head.

The priest's hands extend before him, looming over a small shadow figure who crouches on the ground. From each hand a laser beam fires straight down to the shadow, connecting to handcuffs around their wrists. The shadow person has a powerful magnetic glow surrounding them.

"NO MORE HIDING!" Says the shadow person. "LET. ME. OUT."

The ground cracks beneath them, as if it were impacted by an asteroid.

Back in reality, our narrator returns to consciousness in the same crouched position as the shadow. Her thing braid loops over her shoulder and she is surprised to find herself weeping.

Narration: I woke up in my boyfriend's closet. The irony was not lost on me."

"She was ME all along, Grey." The narrator- Molly- explains tentatively to her boyfriend as they sit on his bed. "Repressed, ashamed & angry as all Hell. How do I be myself after all this time?"

"You can DO this love." The boyfriend reassures her with a hand on her shoulder. "Trust me, admitting who you really are is a big step. The rest is done a little at a time..."

In another scene, Molly's boyfriend gives her the thumbs up as she models a dress.
"...with a lot of help." Finishes Grey's sentence from the previous scene.

Dressed fully in femme clothing, Molly poses with a gaggle of friends.

"You are not alone." Concludes Grey's narration.

TWO-SPIRIT: ah! gosh you're totally right! and i do know someone, but... they left to help indigenous youth in the city, and are hard to ake contact with.

WASKWANE (finding an apple tree ad proceeding to pick the fruit): they'd probably really like it if you called. but you know, even if some elders don't understand your questions about gender identity... having them ear can still help

They are labeled:

Silicone: A big veiny, realistic penis replica.
Stainless Steel: A curved, tapered rod with a smaller bulb on one end and a larger bulb on the other.

"The only material that might not be completely vegan is jelly rubber, since it may contain gelatin or casein, a milk product. Be careful if you're allergic or intolerant!" Cautions Shelby as they toss a realistic penis toy over their shoulder, which jiggles as it soars through the air. "Jelly rubber toys are also a bacterial headache! They are porous, so they can't be completely anitized, BLEGH! It's much more worth it to fork over a few extra bones for nice stuff!"

"bye." The bunny waves at the dildo as it flies over their head, wobbling.

Holding their hands over their head, Shelby summons an enormous rainbow-striped phallus.
"Speaking of ingredients, I also thought about the colors that toys come in, and all of my online searches on this came with absolutely no results."

"OUCH!!" Yelps Shelby, who quickly recovers- albeit with cartoon stars swirling around their head. "Let's move onto kinky stuff..." Ripping open their shirt, they reveal a faux-leather strappy bondage harness with O-rings criss-crossing across their shoulders and ribcage. "Harnesses, collars, whips, and other BDSM items are usually made out of leather. BUT! "Real furs are skinned from animals, and silk is made from boiling silkworms in their cocoons. These materials tend to be more expensive anyway, hahah!" The Sexy Ramp now floats on a sea of sex toys and accoutrements, with Shelby resting on top like a raft. "If a product's box doesn't have the materials listed, you can easily contact the manufacturer! But all in all, it was pretty easy for me to go vegan in the bedroom, which left me PLENTY of time to get to the sexy good stuff!"

"What can I say?" Asks Erika with a shrug while the wand levitates over her hand like magic. "S'why they wanted to work with me in the first place!"

Narration: So earlier this year, I got an email from Magic Wand HQ...

"Hey Erika," An anthropomorphic Magic Wand says cheerily as it protrudes out of a laptop monitor. "we're funding the first scientifically-backed study of vibrator use. Would you provide some illustrations to recruit participants?"

Solemnly, Erika holds up one finger, answering, "Okay, 1) Cool, and 2) YES."

"Great!" Enthuses the vibrator, who is typing away at their own laptop, back in their home base. "...Wanna come to the official, fancy conference in Napa Valley when we present the research? We'll fly ya out and put you up, just draw a comic about it to share with The Internet."

Narration: Which brings us to the day before my trip.

Running frantically in circles, Erika exclaims, "I should be packing!!!!"

Stopping and intently holding her fingers to her temples to calm herself, she says, "Okay, Erika, it's 11pm, you NEED to get your shit together and PACK for your morning flight tomorrow."

The bald man proudly points out his collections to Emil. The walls are completely lined with shelves that are full with similarly shaped objects.

Narrator: These collections included: thimbles, bobbleheads, dice.

Narrator: If this had been a romantic date, these collections would be a way to understand this guy better: who was he? What did he value?
Emil looks at the smiling bald man.

Narrator: More Collections: Lego sculptures, Air Jordans, superman stuff.

Narrator: But with a hookup, there was no reason to be curious or judgmental. Our paths will probably never cross again. Besides, 40% of all people collect something.
The Bald Man asks, "Do you want something to drink?" and Emil replies "Nah. Where's the bedroom?"

The bald man opens his bedroom door for Emil and gestures him inside.
Narrator: During a hookup, you're invited into the most intimate area of a stranger's home. And that's where the collections can get more personal.

Narrator: I contemplate what collection, if any, might be a dealbreaker for me, something so challenging that I might have to leave before things got physical.
Emil regards the collections quizzically, with a finger to his lips.

Narrator: Hunting knives (no way!), Smelly, mold stuff (Do people really collect that?), MAGA stuff (he can believe any ideology he chooses but that doesn't mean I'll get naked with him)

Narrator: In his bedroom, he has shelves of Victorian dolls. Most are old and broken. Many of them have at least one eye missing.
The Bald Man puts his hand on Emil's back as Emil looks at the shelves of Victorian dolls.

Narration: I have OCD, and a lot of my thoughts revolve around the fear of accidentally hurting someone. I know it meant a lot to my partner, but I admit I was worried about how it would make me feel.

The Would-Be Sadist sits down at their laptop and diligently gets to work researching impact toys.

Narration: I ended up buying a simple leather paddle to try out. It seemed like a good way to explore things without having to use my bad wrists.

The Sadist's hand holds up a rectangular paddle in the air. It has three large hearts cut out of it which are both cute and will also cause the paddle to create more pain.

"You ready?" Asks the Sadist.

"Yeah, are you?" Replies the Masochist.

"Here I go..." They reply.

"AAaaaahhhh......" Yowls the Sadist as they swing the paddle down and... very lightly tap the backside of their partner, who is on all fours on the bed.

Gesturing to another silver-haired man who is sauntering in, the bearded man offers, "Let me introduce you to Garry, one of our OG nurses here at M Clinic! He'll give you the rundown on PrEP!"

"Hello!" Chirps Gary, giving a little wave. He sports a silver scruff of hair on top with the sides shaved off, with a well-kept mustache, stubble, and multiple ear piercings. He wears wristbands on each wrist and a collared short-sleeved shirt over another longer-sleeved one, along with jeans.

Breaking out of reality, an angelic light bursts forth from the sky with a larger-than-life-size pink-burgundy ribbon unfurling across the page. "PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is an HIV-prevention medication!" Garry continues, but unlike Hien he remains more realistically drawn. "In short, it helps your white blood cells block the virus from putting down roots and replicating."

Whisked to a pink scene, both Garry and Hien are chibi-fied and looking very stern in suits with sunglasses, their arms crossed over their respective chests. They are serving as bodyguards to an anthropomorphic, thankful white blood cell behind them, that blushes and clasps its hands in appreciation to its protectors. Before them, a brutal battle wages between anthropomorphic blue pills wearing the same kind of sunglasses as Hien and Garry while beating the tar out of anthropomorphic lumpy red and blue virus cells.

"HAVE MY BABIES!" Hollers a virus through weeping tears as it struggles in vain to reach the safe white blood cell.

"No dice, buddy." A tough blue pill calmly states, holding the virus back at arm's length.

Maia: Having a word for yourself is empowering! When I finally discovered the word asexual, it was such a huge relief! Friend: You posted about being ace in April! Full disclosure: I googled it, but I'm still pretty vague on what asexuality is... I think it's the "A" in LGBTQIA? But I still have, like, so many questions.

Maia: So, what would you say attraction feels like?

Maia: Totally! But it took some super personal chats with my all- (non-ace) -friends to realize we meant different things when we talked about being into someone. It turns out that attraction- that pull- is made up of different parts.

Maia: I've got romantic attraction in spades. It's just that for me, that romantic attraction isn't linked to sexual attraction.

Friend: So, when you feel drawn toward someone, you just don't... have the desire to bone them?

Maia: Pretty much! And that's what asexual means: little to no sexual attraction.

Friend: Hold up... a 'little' bit of sexual attraction still counts as ace?

Maia: Yeah, it's not always an all-or-nothing thing. Some people experience sexual attraction rarely, or only under certain circumstances, or just at very low levels. It's kind of a spectrum.

Friend: I guess that tracks, very few things in life are totally black and white!

Maia (gesturing at the black, gray, white, purple-striped Asexual flag): Exactly. That's what the grey is for. Anyone who feels like they don't totally vibe with a 'typical' allo experience is welcome, even if they're in that grey zone between allo and 'absolute zero' sexual attraction.

Friend: Sounds like there's lots of SPACE- in ACE!

Friend: Whoa, you actually... like sex?

Maia: Yeah, there's even a word for it in ace space: sex-favorable. And whether sex favorable, sex-indifferent, or sex-repulsed, all aces are still ace.

Narration: I hemmed and hawed about going on HRT* for so long in my 20s.

A younger Jey ponders and says “Maybe I could try it? A bit more facial hair and a lower voice sounds real nice.

Note: Hormone replacement therapy

Narration: At the time, the only option that was available to me was injections at a full dose.
A needle is shown front and center.

Narration: I chickened out.

Jey sprint away telling themself “Nope! I don’t think T is for me actually!!”

Narration: Years later, I watched a friend transition using T-GEL.
Jey’s friend, who’s look has been changed for privacy, says “I’m starting T but it’s not injections—and it’s been pretty great!” we see Jey’s friend’s transition from pre-T to years on T with a full beard.

Jey looks excited and says “OH! I didn’t know that was even an option, and you look so happy! Maybe—maybe I could go on T after all!

Narration: I went through a lot of hoops to get there but eventually an endocrinologist prescribed me a dose of T-Gel that I was comfortable with as a nonbinary person.

A timeline of Jey in doctors offices, filling out mountains of paperwork, being put on long waitlists, until finally their endo says “Okay, I’ve sent your prescription off.” And Jey lifts their arms up in success “YAY!”

Narration: T-Gel is a form of topical testosterone. It can come in packets, tubes, or a pump bottle that you apply according to your prescription.

Tubes, packets and the common pump bottle of T-Gel are drawn.

Jey has their hands on their hips looking defensive as speech bubbles fill the entire background behind them, berating T-Gel and saying it’s hard to use or isn’t as good as injections. Jey says “I think it’s really amazing but I’ve also seen it get a bad rap."
