The contrast couldn't be more powerful: a man who would have once been denied civil liberties now standing longer and louder than a man who tried to silence millions.

Where Thurmond once used the floor to deny civil rights, Booker used it to defend them - flipping the legacy of the filibuster on its head.

🎙️ Why it mattered:

Senator Booker stood against far-right policies advanced by the Trump administration and its allies, including rollbacks on healthcare access, immigration protections, and reproductive freedom.

🕯️ But history doesn’t stand still.

📣 In April 2025, that record was finally broken by New Jersey’s Senator, Cory Booker, a Democrat and a man of color, who spoke for 25 hours straight in defense of democracy, civil rights, and human dignity.

- 24 hours and 18 minutes of racist obstruction by Senator Strom Thurmond, trying to block the Civil Rights Act of 1957. A segregationist who fought to deny Black Americans basic rights, Thurmond’s record stood for over six decades.

💡 The Bottom Line:
Levies = community self-funding. They’re how we invest in ourselves. And your “yes” or “no” could shape the services you rely on every day.

🗳️ 4. Why does your vote matter?
Levies are decided locally. Sometimes by just a few dozen votes. If turnout is low, even small groups can swing it - in either direction.

📊 3. Where does the money go?
Directly into your neighborhood. Levies can support:
- School staff & programs
- Ambulance or police services
- Mental health & addiction recovery
- Road repair & snow removal

- A new levy means a higher tax.
- A renewal levy keeps your taxes the same.
- A replacement levy resets an old one to current property values, which can raise your taxes even if the rate looks the same.

There are a few types, but most fall into two buckets:
- Operating levies: Pay for day-to-day stuff (like teachers, buses, or books).
- Bond levies: Fund long-term projects (like building a new school or fire station).
💰 2. Is this new or a renewal?

Levies aren’t just boring tax questions - they’re how your community funds its future. Let’s break it down. 👇
🏫 1. What’s a levy, anyway?
A levy is a local tax request - usually by schools, libraries, or public services - that needs your vote to be approved.

📜 On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, creating a safety net for millions of elderly, unemployed, and disadvantaged Americans.

💙 It was a cornerstone of the New Deal and remains one of the most popular government programs to this day.
