I do wonder what (if any) reconciliation can be effected in film studies between a French/Nietzschean philosophy of the image and Jameson’s Marxist insistence on the fundamental category of narrativity. Seems to me to be as good a place as any to do it…

It doesn’t help that the best work in film theory is still quite enamoured with the French thought to which Jameson was critically opposed. The cheeky epigraph in Brinkema’s latest book would seem to suggest that the field has not quite reckoned with Jameson’s influence in literary/cultural study.

From a film studies standpoint, his imitators can leave much to be desired. Jamesonian readings of films can be so prosaic, so formally stifled - his affability is a blessing and a curse in this respect
