We need to pay attention to the bad to know what needs changing, and we need to pour ourselves into the good to remember why it’s worth it.

So while reflecting on the year past, and figuring out what I want to do with this blank canvas of a year, today I’m looking at the good.

So sometimes the good needs our intention. To be looked for. It needs to be chosen. No matter what bad has happened this year, it doesn’t negate the good — we contain multitudes too, and there is joy and beauty quietly standing right alongside our sorrows, and it’s worth amplifying.

Criticisms ring louder than praise. Things as they are supposed to be, quiet and peaceful and unremarkable, don’t stand out the way tragedy does.

And those that perpetuate it count on that. That fear and anger and hate are mightier than love and peace and acceptance. A stick over a carrot.

That said, there’s a tendency for the bad to be so much *louder* than the good. The sharp slap that stands out so much more than a gentle hand, the warm hug. The failure that overshadows all the little successes along the way. Anger commands attention morseo than contentment.
