You’re right, I did promise.” Jungkook swallows. It’s really now or never. “I’m so scared I’m gonna…I’m gonna cheat on you, hyung.”

Jungkook makes good on his promise and sends Namjoon those old baby photos of Soobin after all. There're 15 file attachments sent through Kakao, followed by a sheepish sorry to spam you^^ that Namjoon chuckles at before reacting with a laughing emoticon. He sends a thank you jungkook-ah preemptively, taking a deep breath as he slides his finger back to the first of the photos. Namjoon is torn between tearing through the entire set and savoring each photo for what it's worth, but ultimately settles on flipping from photo to photo with the knowledge that he can always go back later. It's a mix of the scanned photos Jungkook mentioned before and a few snaps of a digital camera with the glaring orange dates in the corner. Soobin in a soft-looking Snoopy shirt, pressed up against a blank wall, barely smiling but dimples still fully on display. Soobin a little older, maybe around the same age as he was in the photo on Jungkook's desk, eyes curved into rounded smile lines as the baby pink beanie over his head droops past his eyebrows. He has little peace signs held up in front of him, arms crossed over his chest proudly. Baby Soobin asleep on Jungkook's mom's chest, photo taken from the side to show her hand pressed to his neck as she looks down at her grandchild with a smile, looking so much like Jungkook that it makes Namjoon ache. Namjoon wonders what each member of Jungkook's family looks like now, thinks about how they must've aged in the twenty years it's been since he saw them with his own two eyes. They'd always been kind to him, always made space for him in their lives. Would they be surprised to see how Namjoon turned out? Would they be disappointed? Namjoon thinks of the way his own mother reacted to the news and has to question whether that same sympathy afforded to Jungkook would be extended to him, too. And right in the middle of the mix, a snap Namjoon isn't sure Jungkook even meant to send. It's a younger Jungkook in a soft white cable-knit sweater with his hands under his belly, hair grown past his ears falling softly against full cheeks rounded from pregnancy. In age alone, he should be the closest to the Jungkook of Namjoon's memory, but is wholly foreign to Namjoon's eyes. Nothing about him is familiar, but if there's something Jeon Jungkook always is, it's beautiful. Namjoon has seen the way Taehyung's face glowed each time he was pregnant, but nothing could have prepared Namjoon for the sight Jungkook made with his belly full of Soobin, the child they created together. He's a dream, bump perfectly rounded in his hands as he grins cheekily at the camera. How Namjoon wishes he could've beholden that selfsame Jungkook with his own eyes.

“You look visibly pregnant,” she notes, though her tone remains neutral. “Do you know if you’ve been seeing consistent growth since conception? Actually, would you happen to have an idea of when conception might’ve been?” Jungkook shakes his head. He can’t look at her without flushing, let alone reply to her question.Namjoon takes a second to clear his throat and wipe at his eyes, but he adds, “We were intimate, uh, quite often in the past few months, but that only tapered off after it was clear Jungkook was pregnant, when he started showing.” “Why would you say that,” Jungkook hisses. It’d be great if the ground would open up and swallow him now.”

“I’ve never seen someone look so unnatural with their baby. It seems Jimin hasn’t warned you yet, but you need to fix that before the coronation. Hell, before the queen’s memorial.” Jungkook’s jaw drops. He can’t believe what he’s hearing. It’s easier to be angry than it is to be hurt, lost, confused, and so he scrambles to get in his own word, pure loathing suddenly coursing through his veins. “You’re an omega too,” he seethes. “You love Beomgyu just as much as Taehyung and Yoongi do; how can you sit and say something like that to me? Are you fucking serious?” “Dead serious. The difference between you and me is that the crown isn’t my life nor is it my family. It doesn’t matter who I love or what I do in my private world because I made it so. These are the direct results of your actions, Jungkook-ah. You made these choices and you have to live with the consequences. One of those consequences, believe it or not, is that you’re an extension of the crown. The moment you put your face out into the public and chose to marry Namjoon is the same moment you chose a life where media would eat you alive if they saw you behaving like this with your baby. You know better; you know you can’t turn off this grand duke shit as you please. This is the life you chose for yourself, so I’m telling you to act like it.” It’s cruel. How Seokjin can look so unaffected by his own words, he’ll never understand. Jungkook’s world hasn’t stopped falling apart since the moment they agreed to this plan to fucking assassinate the queen, and Seokjin sits here with the audacity to tell him to get his act together. He can’t, he can’t, he won’t. “Fine, it was my choice. I chose to be a part of this, I chose to be the show pony of an entire nation. What about Namjoon? He was born into this circus. He has no choice. Life isn’t fair, we’re all-we’re all doing the best we can. I’m trying.” “And what do you think Namjoon was doing?” Seokjin asks sharply, eyes glinting black as they narrow to thin slits. “He did everything he could to get back to you because he promised you he’d be there. He heard how scared you were, just saw your brother die before his very eyes. Even with six guards meeting us at the safe house, he reversed all my orders and demanded to be brought to you.” Seokjin pauses to exhale loudly. “When his mother died and everything went awry, he was thinking about you. You really mean to tell me that you can’t do this for him? You can’t be with him after he’s proven time and again that Yoongi be damned, this entire world be shot to hell and back—he wants you?” It’s the most scathing look Seokjin has ever directed toward Jungkook. In turn, Jungkook can’t believe he ever slept with him, the mere memory drawing his skin tight. It tells Jungkook everything he needs to know about allegiance, that Seokjin before anything else is Namjoon’s best friend. Not his.

Out of all the things Jungkook could do, he laughs. There's no fucking way. "You're lying to me. Min Yoongi was the one that drove my brother to his death? Him? Of all people, it had to be your best friend, your ex-lover, whatever the fuck he is to us now, an accomplice to your mother's murder," Jungkook seethes lowly, "that's the last fucking person my brother ever saw before he died? I told you this isn't funny, this isn't fair." "I know. I know it isn't fair. I know." "Don't just stand there saying you know," Jungkook spits. Righteous anger is an even balmier place to be than hurt. Desperation at a world toppled upside-down. "Where is he? Where the fuck is Min Yoongi so I can strangle him with my bare hands. I swear to everything I have that I'll kill him. I'll kill him."

“So considerate, my husband,” Jungkook drawls, moving to lean his chin against his palm. He tilts his head to the side, as if he’s really thinking about all this. “I already requested off next week, and my only school thing just requires you to help me with my essay. Funny how that works out, huh?” Namjoon doesn’t press any further, instead nods once before smiling. “So I’m trading you a ring and essay edits in exchange for your devotion and care, hm?” “Terrible trade-off, especially since I can’t even make you write my actual essay for me, just edit it,” Jungkook bemoans. “And what could be a worthy equivalent, my dear husband?” “A car.” Stone-faced, Jungkook tries to remain. Namjoon sputters. “A car?” Jungkook nods dramatically. “I want your Mercedes. I’m not even asking for the Porsche, so I’m being especially generous, you know.”

(taken from the next chapter of fool's gold) “Follow me,” the receptionist greets kindly, standing from her seat and clicking something on what looks to be some wireless earpiece clipped behind her ear. She starts down the hallway, and Jungkook supposes this is the way to his husband’s office. “Kim byeon was in court this morning but he got back a bit before lunch today. He hasn’t had a free afternoon in months, he’s usually been in meetings or preparing for depositions lately.” Unsure of why she’s telling him this, Jungkook merely nods and utters a quiet affirmative to show he’s still listening. What kind of law does Namjoon even practice? Something something not a labor lawyer rings a bell somewhere, but has Jungkook ever asked? Her eyes are bright when she turns back to gesture Jungkook to look past the open layout of cubicles crammed against one another, all surprisingly empty, and toward the endless glass offices that line the far wall. Everything looks identical to each other, there’s no way to tell which of those offices are Namjoon’s, let alone if any of them are. “Kim byeon cleared his entire schedule to see you today. He’s never done that before, especially not a few weeks before he’s set to go to trial with a huge case.”

“I’ve been married before,” Namjoon says, not unkindly. Jungkook swallows. “I know.” “You’re a lot younger than I am, Jungkook-ah. When I was your age, Chaewon was two and Jin hyung was pregnant with Yunjin-ie.” Jungkook has never felt particularly rankled by his own age, but he supposes there’s always time to try something new. Namjoon says words like, when I was your age, so easily, as if Jungkook isn’t here asking to love his family right now. “That’s not my fault,” Jungkook says, and immediately he regrets it. He sounds petulant, as if he’s out to prove his boyfriend right. So he shakes his head and tries again, though his frustration is nowhere near appeased. Maybe this is the very reason Namjoon will never see him as a viable partner. And if that’s the case, Jungkook might as well push him all the way, if only to see if Namjoon can handle it. “Would it help if I went out and got pregnant right now? Should I go meet someone new, have them knock me up so I can go raise a kid like you and Seokjin-ssi did at my age? Does my age really bother you that much? I’m 27, Namjoon. I’m not the kid you think I am.”

Confession time: one of the primary reasons I haven’t updated TBF in years is because I lack the courage to go back and face all the typos and unfinished sentences I haphazardly left all throughout the first 8 chapters. Absolutely a pride thing.
