I think the bright tone of SNW belies its pessimism towards peace and good will. Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach, All Those Who Wander, A Quality of Mercy, and Under The Cloak of War are about how peaceful reconciliation is impossible.

Strange New Worlds rewrote Balance of Terror and made it about the folly of showing mercy. There's an episode where the ship's doctor murders an ambassador and Pike covers it up.
