We used a large piece of melamine and screwed in wall hooks so we just line up the legs of the base and spin it a little into the hooks screwed into the board. It basically snaps into place under the edges of the hooks. Makes for easy set up and take down while being extremely stable

Get the plastic ornaments from the dollar store for the bottom of the tree. Also, hook the base to a large board underneath so it can't be tipped over
