I just checked I-74 in Indiana for signs for the Whitewater River (~exit 168) and Tanner’s Creek (~exit 161), and both were there. I was pretty sure most roads no longer had them. I’ll pay more attention. @uarctos.bsky.social

Does your library give you access to OED online? First use appears to be wrist-watch by R.S.S. Baden-Powell in 1897. Clock goes back to 1370! Watch as an alarm goes back to 1440, but in the pocket sense of “a small time piece” only to 1590. I think of the inside having a clockwork mechanism, but:
1696 The parts of a Movement, which I shall consider, are the Watch, and Clock. The Watch-part of a Movement is that which serveth to the measuring the hours. In which the first thing I shall consider is the Ballance. W. Derham, Artificial Clock-maker i. 3 1590 IV.21.a. A small time-piece; originally one with a spring-driven movement, and of a size to be carried in the pocket; now also frequently, a wrist-watch (spring- or battery-driven). The occasional occurrence of the term pocket-watch (see quot. ?1705) suggests that the word was sometimes applied to spring-driven clocks of larger size. From the beginning of the 17th cent. ‘watches’ (from the context clearly pocket watches) are often spoken of as striking.
