I work on large scanning projects at work and make datasets from manuscripts for fun.

Reintro for bluesky: I mostly talk about academia & libraries. I will yell about copyright law at some point. I'm working on the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions digitization at my job & creating a dataset of Early Modern Costume book contents for fun. This is Lucy Lawless and Appa, my managers.
Professional conferences as learning opportunities and a weird form of group therapy....

Honestly just want to know how bread is holding up in all this.
So there's an EU-funded campaign to get millenials to eat potatoes and - I swear to Jesus I'm not making this up - it's slogan is: "Europe's favourite since 1536."

At my first professional job, I handled and read survivor accounts. It remains some of the most horrific things I've read in the archives. The medal of honor was given for bravely killing unarmed women, children, and the elderly. The opposite of honorable.
Only an administration intent on committing war crimes in the present and future would stoop to calling Wounded Knee a "battle" rather than what it truly was: a massacre of over 250 Lakotas, mainly women, children, and the elderly. 1/

The city sent me a notice about my native garden and #LucyLawless immediately tried to eat it. To be clear, Lucy Lawless is a cat and is ready to fight the man, right after this nap.

General thoughts about this week: There is no order of words or rephrasings that will get you a republicans' agreement unless you're willing to replace your beliefs with theirs.

Nothing will be good enough so stop trying to get them to nod along with you. It's not helping and they'll be mad anyway

In these troubled times, this is what we need: collective caffeine withdrawal due to #tariffs and #inflation. A more irritable country for all. #coffee
Your morning coffee has gotten more expensive.

Why?

President Trump's chaotic tariffs and failed policies benefit billionaires and raise prices for everyone else.

Donald Trump announced that he won't be sending troops to #Chicago bc the city is "Hostile" & full of "Professional Agitators."

Wrong: The entire city is professional agitators.

They made malort for no reason.
Their pizzas are made of spite.

I'm a bad person but I am drinking the tears of both bears and vikings fans because my entire NFL fan experience is defined by dunking on every team for kicks.

News continues to be bad. Lucy continues to be a model with her ability to find the light and hold a pose and while simultaneously being a terrible workout companion.

Last year we got a Department of Education Grant focused on decreasing textbook costs for dental education on all levels! We just published our first book last week (While I was on vacation, so we is doing a lot of heavy lifting here).

A more moderate pope is good for American Catholic colleges and universities, as it provides a small bulwark against pressure from the administration. Freedom of Religion allows Unis to not change policies on a theological basis , and the pope supports that particular interpretation.

Everything is on fire so I guess I'll submit a talk to this symposium about Margery Kempe (as a way to talk about teaching primary source reading skills to non-historians).

And now time to apply to law school as well. I'm not sane, it's fine, I've accepted this.

@soilent.bsky.social recently asked me to put together an introductory list of introductory socialist/communist readings, and I thought it might be helpful.

The goal of this is not to be definitive, or to say these are the only important texts, but rather to give a starting point.

Dorothy B. Porter changed libraries 💜

The Dewey Decimal System used to only have two classifications for Black people: 325 (colonization) & 326 (slavery). Each book by a Black person was put into one of these classifications. A book of poetry? Classified as colonization.
