Mexican free-tailed bats use ultrasonic calls to navigate the night. Roosting in large groups makes them vulnerable to habitat loss. Migrating north in spring, they appear in SoCal, and their dramatic cave emergences can be seen at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.

Have you ever noticed these red bumps on the leaves of Arroyo Willows? Although they look strange, these galls are harmless. These galls provide sawfly larvae with nutrients and shelter to develop. Check out the 2nd slide to see how these galls are formed and why they are so important to sawflies.

Dressed like a bumblebee but far more deadly, the bee killer (Mallophora fautrix) is a robber fly that ambushes bees, wasps, and other insects mid-air. Its mimicry keeps predators away, though it doesn’t sting or pollinate, just hunts

OC summers are hot, dry, and perfect conditions for wildfires to spread. A single spark from a campfire, grill, or even trash can ignite dry grasses in seconds. By being cautious with fire, you can help protect the homes of many species including our own and reduce the risk of disaster across CA.

Restoration success this past July at Huntington Beach Wetlands! Thanks to 50 amazing volunteers, we tackled invasive plant removal, native plant propagation, and removed 567 pounds of invasive species like Algerian and European Sea Lavender!

This past July, OCH was back at the Upper Newport Bay Salt Marsh for another successful restoration event! 🌿 Together, we removed 15 pounds of invasive vegetation and collected 40 pounds of trash from the marsh. Thank you to everyone who showed up and made a difference!
