Writer. Skeptic. Legitimately afraid that misinformation will doom us all
Oof my god Ken don't do that to me. Why is your money on that?

It took me long enough to accept no locality and realism. Then fast forward some years and I'm happily demonstrating CHSH violation in my masters thesis

I think this isn't really directed at your position. I just notice resistance from some people to QM being so weird, like there *must* be some more intuitive explanation.

But really there's no requirement that QM or nature should make intuitive sense to us; we're just apes with cyclotrons and shit.

On "philosophizing" v "modelling": That is kind of my point. I feel like a lot of the "philosophy" is just taking the models unnecessarily literally.

You're totally right about "good" questions. And also they're supremely important questions anyway, for trying to understand the universe we live in

Here I disagree. You know better than me (lowly MSc in theory, lol), but this seems fundamentally different in QM since there are no set values pre measurement. So philosophizing about whether it's spin up or down does seem weird.

So, what if we could *never* know the answer: Still a good question?
July 30, 2025 at 8:30 PM
Ok I see your point. I was wrong to say it depends on the answer, because if it was coherent obviously it would need some drastic new insight that would almost certainly be useful. I'm still uneasy making a statement like this about something that, by definition, we don't know, but it does seem fair

Although I concede that maybe I'm just not good enough at philosophy 🤣

The difference from thermo and other areas I think is just in the nature of the problem.

E.g. an electron has no definite spin direction until we measure. Does that mean an unmeasured electron intrinsically "has" spin or not?

I have absolutely no idea how you could answer that.

This view is heavily inspired by my QFT professor, who was asked what the Feynman diagram/path integral approach is actually doing. He said "it doesn't matter, it just predicts the experiments" in such a matter of fact way. I'd never thought about it like that before and I think it's more accurate
July 30, 2025 at 1:40 PM
I suppose whether it's important depends to some extent on what the answer is, since it could inspire a new formalism or way of thinking. But overall the question of "is the wave function an actual thing?" is not materially important to the physics. It allows accurate calculation, that's it
July 30, 2025 at 1:40 PM
Lest we forget that the "normal" way of thinking about physics says that particles are INFINITESIMAL things which OCCUPY NO VOLUME.

Like bro what the fuck are you talking about
July 30, 2025 at 11:27 AM
When you get down to this scale, nothing corresponds to our intuition anyway. We have developed this complex mathematical machinery so we can do the physics. How much does the weird philosophy even matter?

To be clear, I FUCKING LOVE the discussion, but there is no answer and there may never be one

No no if it's not from the génocidé region of France it's just sparkling ethnic cleansing
July 30, 2025 at 10:30 AM
You do have a good point that it doesn't matter *from the gov's perspective* which it is, action is desperately needed. It's just sad how it is controversial to call a spade a spade in this discussion.

No wonder these pricks get away with so much before anyone does anything.

Because he lacks the moral conviction to just do it because it's right, and lacks the balls to challenge British political norms.

The "Gaza isn't an important issue for domestic elections anyway" crowd seem to have realised that it WAS important all along.

Maybe don't support a genocide? Crazy political stance I know.

FWIW, I (and most others) said Trump was worse. The intent was to push Harris to OPENLY OPPOSE MASS MURDER.
