On Tuesday, March 25th at 1:40 PM I'm speaking about Freezing Saddles, the DC winter cycling game I help organize and maintain, at George Washington University's first OSCON (Open Source convention). If you can, register now as registration closes at midnight on Thursday, March 20th. The abstract of the talk is on the conference site: You might consider folks who bicycle outdoors in the winter of being obsessive - but the DC area has a unique group of cold-weather cycling enthusiasts who rely on Open Source software to facilitate their Reindeer Games: the Freezing Saddles Winter Cycling competition.

The whole thing is amazing and absolutely worth watching until the end.

But @meredithmeredith.bsky.social gave the best pitch for @signal.org answering if there are any downsides of using it: "No-none! It's free, classy and we're not shoving and weird #AI shit into it." 🤣 👏

Thirty years ago today I registered the domain name obscure.org. I was eager to run my own Internet services and what emerged is now The Obscure Organization, which is still going strong as a community non-profit. I’m planning on a year of renewal for the organization and reconnecting with both the people involved so far. and the impulses that inspired me to try to share what I learned with the world in a practical way. I have a lot more to say about this, but for now: Happy 30th birthday to obscure.org!

Bought some used hardware on eBay. Factory reset didn't work. Wasn't able to get in with admin/admin.

So, I desoldered the flash chip, replaced it with a ZIF socket, dumped it, and pointed John the Ripper at /etc/shadow.

Password was "admin", but username was "agcfw".

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated.

Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!
Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭

It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.

I’m taking a week long break from #Meta, as much as possible anyway, and finding a couple things hard to disconnect from. Messenger ties me to my weekly D&D group and we do audio over it. WhatsApp I don’t use regularly, but found you can’t log out of it on iPhone without deleting your account! Ugh.

I just cancelled my Twitter account. It was active Jan 17, 2010 to Jan 11, 2025. Writing 3,159 tweets taught me to be more concise. It's sad how far the site has gone downhill.

I regret voting for allowing the acquisition.

I'm optimistic that Bluesky will be better.
