The route to Martin's was only three miles long, and despite the fact this was the forth time she walked with me, she beheld everything as if it were the first. Where I saw nothing worth noting, she saw a story. Homes that had withstood the test of time with their tin roofs and mildewed, termite feast paneling. Sun-bleached children's toys abandoned in the grass. A distinct lack of innocent laughter, of juvenile creativity. I could remember, vaguely, when it was still there, but I found I couldn't remember when it had ceased. She saw the effort put forth in the dilapidated shops with hand-carved signs from raw slabs of wood, selling small luxuries despite the lack of new business. In the unwavering smiles of people going about their day, although grown weary with a hard life. Where I saw nothing but a drab, washed-up town, she saw what brought it to be—love, pride, hope. Admittedly, at first, I thought it was a crock of shit, but that lilting voice dripped with honey-thick passion lured me in. Every word held me captive, spellbound. And suddenly, I began to believe her. “—Can't wait ‘til my family gets back. Show ‘em ‘round, y'know?”
