On your non-penalty shots graphic, what is the difference between Live and the regular NPxG values? Amazing work by the way 🙌

Great piece. @mixedknuts.bsky.social it was just announced that United have hired Dan Nichol as a consultant to help build out a new data department. Any insight into him and if he could move the needle for the club? I'm sure I recognise his name from StatsBomb over the years

Great insight. Do United have the capacity to spend money on transfers prior to June 30th without sales?

Still a fantastic article, love the blend of stats whilst providing context to them and how they can apply specifically to his new team

Good read, although the part about him being right footed is incorrect

because the high press from goal kicks looks better. Zirkzee has to be more aggressive on Baleba for the first goal, Mazraoui more switched on to Mitoma's movement. The use of the 5-2-3 is horrible though, I know the intention is to force and trap the ball wide but it's too easy to play through
January 21, 2025 at 4:22 PM
When they high press and go m2m they do this but Inter's WCBs jumping into midfield from their 5-3-2 block is a common feature - Inzaghi hates his WCBs going 1v1 with wingers. When United jump from their 5-4-1 shape it's extremely inconsistent. It looks more execution / intensity related
January 21, 2025 at 4:22 PM
Isn't this a technical execution error / lack of intensity in the press rather than a structural issue with the 3-4-3 though? Inzaghi's Inter push their outside centre backs up aggresively into midfield and leave their wing backs to mark the opposition winger

Great read. Do you think this is a United / PL adaptation from Amorim to intentionally go around the block or a result of the players themselves not being capable or confident of playing through the centre consistently?
December 25, 2024 at 5:30 PM
Would be great to see a visual representation of say a build up structure and a description of the intent and pros & cons of it. It's something I've been thinking of building as a project but wasn't sure if anything similar existed already

Are there any tools that can provide written analysis on team setups / phases of a game? For example, in chess there is an evaluation bar that shows who has the advantage at any given time but no explanation for why. Tools have been created to explain the reasons and provide context

As somebody who used to build digital identity blockchain solutions a few years ago, it's been so depressing to see what that industry has become. 99.9% pyramid schemes with absolutely no utility or value

The positional rotation of Garnacho and Dalot against Bodo Glimt was a really interesting 2nd half tweak, with Garna staying wide in possession and Dalot occupying the left sided 10 position. I wonder if we’ll see this more in the short term if he doesn’t like Garna at LWB

Amorim made a comment after the game about how United "clearly" defended in a 442 out of possession, also spoke more about it during the embargoed section of the press conference that will release later today. Is this something Sporting did at times or possibly a United adaptation?

Further confirmation of this approach in Amorim's press conference just now where he said they spent the last week focusing on build up in training www.youtube.com/live/JoM-8FE...

How do top teams who play 3 at the back, like Inter and Leverkusen, deal with getting overloaded in midfield? If you have the outside centre backs stepping out, is it just a case of needing the central centre back to be switched on and always cover?
November 27, 2024 at 11:01 AM
Extremely well researched, clearly communicated, and objective nuanced analysis that doesn’t stoop to clickbait style takes where everything is either elite or rubbish. One of the absolute best accounts

Do you think it’s likely he’ll continue with a relatively passive front press this season? Been very impressed with his emphasis on simplicity in instructions so far, especially with how little training time there will be from now. Fully expect some ‘written off’ players to shine now

As somebody trying to learn more about the tactical side, I kept referring back to this piece after watching Sporting games. Has really helped me understand and spot different things 🙌. What OOP principles are you looking for in Amorim's United games to see his evolution / ability to adapt?
November 22, 2024 at 10:46 AM
That’s really interesting about the shots. I remember reading something in Ian Graham’s book about how they did similar at Liverpool when filtering players by initially using a couple of really simple linked metrics to create smaller shortlists
November 19, 2024 at 9:18 PM
Is it possible to take a list of current, established top players by position and then view a snapshot of their per 90 metrics immediately prior to moving to a big league, then looking to identify the metrics that correlate to the player being a success? Love your work by the way!
November 19, 2024 at 10:59 AM
Great read once again. I know it’s extremely unlikely unless Chelsea finish below 14th, but how would you see Sancho profiling in an Amorim team?
