What makes this so great is it didn't immediately convert Valjean. It triggered a war between his commitment to hate and the fact that someone had saved him for no reason. It wasn't possible to believe both; one or the other had to go.

Tough to say for certain since district court cases are not always reported, especially from that long ago. But I did find a Fifth Cir. case, US v. Cassius Clay.

I don't want to criticize anyone who didn't know that the symbol was called a totenkopf, but the Are We Baddies? sketch mocking the symbol was aired in September 2006. Platner got the tattoo in 2007. It was not really an unknown quantity.

There are other skull tattoos, but they're not versions of that specific design. IMO, it would be pretty risky for Marines to have that design given the history and the Corps' policy prohibiting extremist tattoos. They are checked at enlistment and monitored (IIRC) twice a year at check ups.

That is really nothing like the usual skull iconography you find in the Marines. For example, the Marine Raiders logo has a prominent skull in the middle, and it's common to see PT gear with generic smiling skulls like this. But not that specific version of the totenkopf.

I was ready to partially defend Platner based on the fact that skull tattoos are not uncommon in the Marines, but wow, that looks like the actual totenkopf used by the SS from 1934-1945. I am genuinely surprised he was allowed to enlist in the Nat'l Guard after getting out of the Marines.
